So who do we like for the next Gubernatorial race?
Just wondering what everyone thinks. I remember giving money to Phil Angelides (sp?) to help him make some commercial; I can't even remember what it was for now!

From what I've read on his site, I like him. Are there any other good people for CA that you've been thinking about?

I like him too. He seems to me the one who has the most momentum now.

4. Angelides has the inside track. He's got the support of the party folks.
Pelosi and Boxer are his campaign's cochairs. http://www.angelides.com/media/releases/2005_0416_convention.html

Because of the history of developers' impact in my area and in our local politics, I'm not real fond of land/real estate developers which is what Angelides was in the private sector. So that's my bias. But I figure Angelides is the party insiders' pick and no one else will get the funding and party support. He's got a history in government service and private business enterprise. He can promote a progressive line while still being business friendly.

Westly, currently State Controller, is the other guy who's announced. For reasons noted above, I don't think he has much of a chance.

12. just a little snippet about him
Born in the Southern California city of Arcadia and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Steve Westly is a proud California native. An innovator throughout his career, Steve was an early executive at eBay, which he helped to build into one of America’s most successful companies. Serving as State Controller of California since 2002, he’s been a tough fiscal watchdog.

Steve has spent his life working in both the public and private sectors.

He’s served in government at the local, state and federal level, having spent time in San Jose’s Office of Economic Development and at the Department of Energy in Washington, DC.

11. Westly was elected to actually work with the Gropinator
and a lot of Dems voted for Arnold. So,
some people are smarter these days and
Westly has kept the checks coming for
state workers.

10. I'd like to see Jackie Speier run...
But she's running for lieutenant governor in 2006, so I'll have to settle for the dream she runs for governor in 2010 or 2014. Any way it shakes out, she has my total support - 100%.

to be wasted in Washington. ;)

Together, when she's ready to run for governor, we'll run her campaign and make it happen.

25. They do have some big differences
Mr.Westly put his arm around Arnold and said I voted for him in the recall. He is supposed to work with him, not be his bitch.

Mr. Angelides, he has more self respect than that. It is not about a party line, it is about self respect and integrity.

26. of the 2, Angelides is more progressive.
He has a vision of California that is hard 2 ignore. If you ever get a chance 2 hear him speak - do it. He is a great speaker, able 2 communicate his ideas; answers questions straight - he calls himself the 'Anti-arnold'. Had a bar-be-que fundraiser for him last summer.

32. Angelides said tonight at our fundraiser
that Westly is a supporter of Walmart - and I think he said, I'm not 100% sure (it was noisey during his post-speech mingle) that Westly even holds stock in Walmart.

Need anything else be said?

30. I'm leaning Angelides
he used to run the Dem party and I was always impressed with his abilities.

His grasp of the nuance of the fiscal problems CA has is also very impressive.

Steve Westley is a good guy too, but the fact is despite some hysteria upthread, ANY DEM challenger could beat Arnold in a heads-up race.

He can't split the electorate in this race, and the yahoos that got their thrill voting for the Termionator won't be back.
