Moving--Anyone here live in or near Hot Springs?
My husband and I are most likely going to be moving to Hot Springs within the next year. I posted months ago asking for advice about where might be a good place in Arkansas to relocate (we're in Sacramento, CA) just to be closer to my elderly parents (and my thanks to all who responded), but circumstances have changed, and we are now going to need to be in or very near to Hot Springs. My mom is suddenly alone now, and needs our help. I'm in Hot Springs right now visiting my mom, and have an appointment to look at a few homes in the city tomorrow morning. So... I'd sure appreciate hearing from anyone who might be nearby. I lived here as a kid, but have been away for about 40 years now (except for brief family visits), so I figure I can adjust reasonably well, but my hubby is California born and bred. He's cool about this but I know there will be some culture shock. It sure would help to know of a few liberal-minded folks in the area! Anyone out there?

I got at the springs. I also miss summer rain and thunderstorms. And the beautiful fall colors on the mountains.

2. Look for an affordable rental
Hot Springs was/is a hotspot for second homes. Because of that it's been hit harder than much of Arkansas by the real estate bust. It may take a few years for the full effect to be felt, but prices will decline in the meantime.

There are a large number of homes for sale, some people can't afford to sit on them and would welcome a responsible renter. You'll find renting to be dramatically less expensive than owning. Put your proceeds from your California home in FDIC insured bank accounts. It isn't taxable, it is guaranteed safe in the bank, and will grow. The downside is that the growth is taxable income, but if you consider real loss on a house is not deductible, you will come out ahead.

3. PS
I'm in Little Rock, which is liberal by Southern standards, but not by real world standards.

Hot springs is a neat place. Your husband will adjust.
