Successs Story! Air America is back on the air!
Success Story! Air America Phoenix is back on the air!
Edited on Sat Mar-25-06 08:53 PM by saracat
Thanks to all the locals listeners and advertisers who contributed the money , we have brought AAR Phoenix back. It will be on a different station but we have thwarted the Christian Cooaltion(who bought out the last location and refused to sell time) and are back on the air April 3rd. Read below for details and please continue to help. We cannot afford to be silenced!

Friends,

I come bearing good news.
We are proud to announce that starting April 3rd Air America Phoenix will return to the airwaves.
Our new home is at 1480 AM KPHX.
We will be carrying all of your favorite Air America personalities plus Dr. Mike Newcomb in the morning.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to the effort. This has been a remarkable effort and perhaps the most intense three weeks of my life. In the end we were able to negoitiate a better deal than we were first offered to get us in the door. We are not out of the woods yet. We need to raise more funds to finish paying the lease. We will be continuing the pixel drive in hopes to offset some of the money we have had to borrow to get on the air.
Go to www.saveairamericaphoenix.com to contribute.

Thanks again and we look forward to talking with you on the air.

Jeff Farias

2. Thank you Saracat for spreading the great news.
I am sooo excited. It's been empty without them.

Now - does anyone know if there will be more power than 1010?

Oh heck, a little bit of power is better than nothing.

13. Maybe the fact that 1010 is in Tolleson means that the new

station will, if only by virtue of a more central location (Phoenix) generate a stronger signal for most of us.

Don't know really.

16. less daytime power, more nighttime power
According to various websites, the daytime power is only 5,000 watts (1/3 of the 1010 signal), but the towers are about 10 miles closer to central Phoenix, so that might mitigate any noticeable difference in the Phoenix metro area. The nighttime power is twice as much as at 1010 (500 watts vs. 250), so we might actually have a decent signal after sundown...I'll start testing that tonight.

Here's a link to some (outdated) info on 1480, including coverage maps:

and for comparison, here's one for 1010:

30. Fck Goyette - I am still pissed at him
Nov 1 2004, he was still on 1100. I was listening to him on my way to work.
He did a 1/2 rant why you shouldn't vote for bsh. (duh)

Then he did a 1/2 rant why YOU SHOULDN'T VOTE FOR KERRY!
He wanted everyone to vote for Bandarik. Yeah maybe - but not that election.
Sorry, a vote for Bandarik was throwing away your vote. He had no chance. This election was too important. The polls showed that Az was in a virtual tie before the election. How could he have done that? First we need to get America back, then vote for a 3rd party to make a statement. Who knows if he swayed any voters. He should have been smart enough to figure it out, and been encouraging everyone to 1) vote, and 2) vote for Kerry.

So if you saw someone driving down the 101 the day before the election, screaming at her radio, it was me. Screaming at Goyette.

33. Goyette's web page changed.
Everytime before when I looked it had the disclaimer that he isn't advocating donating funds for Air America etc.

The first time I looked after it announced that the new AAR Phoenix was a go, it said this in big letters:

"The Charles Goyette Show
This site is down for scheduled maintenance.
Please check back again soon. "

Hmmm.

8. Who cares about Goyette
He's friends with that Christie jerk who sold out to the Christians, and he also openly refused (on his website) to get involved with the drive to bring AAR back to Phoenix. Why should he benefit from something he refused to help? As long as Dr. Mike and AAR is back, Goyette can go hang himself as far as I'm concerned. Save air time for AAR *supporters*, not friends of the guy who sold AAR out to the Christofascists.

10. BOb Christie did NOT sell out to the Christians. He busted his hump trying
to get another station. He only owned the AAR franchise NOT the station. He couldn't sell what he didn't own. He ran out of time and lost a lot of his own money trying to keep AAR on the air. If you want to know who Bob Christie is really good friends with, it is Randi Rhodes. He has known her for years and used to be her producer. He also managed another station she worked at. Please get your facts straight. This is really unfair to a man who went out on a limb fpr AAR. The question for me is why AAR National didn't help in any signifigant way.

18. yes and no
Yes, Goyette is friends with Bob Christy (that's the spelling, BTW), and it's been speculated that Christy, like Goyette in more of a Libertarian than a progressive or a liberal. But no, he didn't sell out to the Christians...he didn't own the station, so he didn't have anything to sell.

24. yes and yes
Then how do you explain what I heard with my own ears, that HIS money (from selling out) was delivered by FedEx?

I don't care if the guy is friends with Christ himself, he sold out and then gave up after only two half-hearted "attempts" to get another frequency for AAR.

The fact that it's been done in just a month by truly devoted people is proof that Bob didn't "bust his hump"--he just took the money and ran to California.

I just hope he doesn't run their AAR station into the ground the way he did this one.

Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 09:47 PM by DTinAZ
I heard the same audio that you did and you're incorrect. The "Federal Express" quote was something that Bob Christy said in response to a question from Charles Goyette near the end of his show on Feb. 28th. When asked what he was going to tell the staff at their 5:00pm meeting on the final day, he said:

"...what James Crystal Enterprises put together for a severance plan for everybody, and I think the checks should be here by Federal Express, if not, they'll be here in the next couple of days..."

If you want to go check for yourself, here's the link to the archive page:

http://www.charlesgoyette.com/archive/?2006-02-28-Charles

He did not "sell out." Of course, one of those checks would be for him, but it's not at all what you imply. And comparing what "Team Newcomb" has done with what Bob Christy was trying to do is apples and oranges...they're not the same thing. Christy was trying to put together a purchase of a station, not leasing time from another owner.

20. yep, on the air and on his message board
Despite the efforts of our local talkers to contact him, he poo-poohed the efforts and said that he was working on a better way of getting progressive talk back on the Phoenix airwaves. He said that he was in talks with investors looking into purchasing a station in Phoenix, maybe even buying back the 1010 frequency, which is a STUPID idea, in that the 1010 signal really sucks at night (about which he probably doesn't care, because he does a daytime show).

He and his minions posted unfounded negative speculation about the legitimacy of the "SaveAirAmericaPhoenix.com" website and the effort to raise funds. Some of us tried to get them to stop doing this, and to actually pick up a telephone and have a chat with the local organizers, but they refused. Then, in a "Friday Night Massacre," Ed's producer removed the Phoenix-related discussions from Ed's message boards and deleted some of the users. I think he was eventually shamed into restoring one of the Phoenix threads, which you'll find here:

I often think Eddie's heart is in the right place, but he isn't the most knowledgeable, quickest talk show host kid on the block.

Still overall I do think he helps our side, usually, if not always.

25. You can take a man out of the Republican party
But you can't take the Republican out of the man. I don't know why Ed is so against ANY activism, unless he thinks it'll distract people from listening to his show. But the thing is, if he'd take the role as a leader of activists, he'd have a more loyal following like Randi Rhodes. Ed's just trying to create a new breed of sheeple, so it seems....

39. The Fred McChesney Show (?)
According to the M & M Brothers website (www.foxlies.com), Fred McChesney is developing a new show for AAPHX on the weekends.

The M and M Show is defunct. The guys could not agree on a show format, and had many other significant differences. Fred McChesney, the creator and host of the M and M Show, who did the music, production, rants, fake commercials, and comedy segments; is putting together a show for the new station, which will likely air on the weekends. Steve has said he is not planning to do a show.

40. Was Fred the one that did most of the talking?
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 11:10 PM by pirhana
One was a teacher. And the other moved here from SF.
I personally liked the one that moved here from SF better, he was the one
that did most of the talking. Most of the rants. So that would be a good thing.
Altho - I did like how they bounced off of each other. And the bro that was
the teacher really knew his history. Whenever something came up, he could rattle off facts.

Maybe one will start the new show, and the other will change his mind and join.
I checked out their website the other day. Will go back and check in again.
They were a good team.

What I enjoyed most about that show was how they changed over the year.
When I first started listening to them, they would say things like "We are not conspiracy theorists"
and they would be so calm. By the time AAR was taken off the air, they were talking about the 9/11 conspiracy like it was fact - screaming their heads off at any right winger that dared call. hehe.
I miss them.

on edit - I just emailed Fred telling him how much I missed him, and that I am hoping that the other half of the M/M show will change their mind.

42. Brief AZ Central article on new AAR Phoenix
A few days ago.

"Air America gets new home on radio dial in Valley

Mar. 28, 2006 12:00 AM

Air America Radio has found a new home in the Valley.

The liberal-talk network will debut Monday on KPHX-AM (1480).

Nova M Radio, a company headed by Valley radio personality Mike Newcomb and Air America founders Sheldon and Anita Drobny, will lease the radio station.
Newcomb's nationally syndicated show will air from 6 to 9 a.m., followed by Air America programming.

Air America previously was heard on KXXT-AM (1010), but the station changed ownership and switched formats this month.

"There was a palpable sense of loss in the community," said Newcomb, who takes over as general manager at KPHX.

"To pull this off is a great victory."

- Randy Cordova"

43. Listened to 1480 last nite - and it powered down on me.!
Dam! I was hoping that it would have been better than 1010.
But that could be because I live in Chandler. When AAR was on 101, I could be in my car in Tempe, and the minute I got into Chandler, the static got worse. That's probably because there are still so many W stickers still around out here. :silly:

Right now 1480 is Sinatra era music. Wonder if we'll be seeing alot of angry senior citizens :)

44. The old station powered down too
KXXT broadcasts at 15,000 watts in the daytime and 250 watts at night.

KPHX broadcasts at 5,000 watts in the daytime and 500 watts at night.

Also, the KPHX tower is closer to downtown the the KXXT one so I've read. Maybe thats why it doesn't work as well in Chandler. I live in North Phoenix, so the daytime signal is a bit below average and the nighttime one is barely passable.
