++ TALKING POINTS ++

Kerry’s Debate Performance

-> America saw John Kerry as our next President tonight.

-> Kerry showed strength, conviction and steady command of the facts.

-> Kerry left no doubt he can lead the fight to hunt and kill the terrorists.

-> Kerry offered hope for a fresh start in Iraq so we can finish the job. Kerry has specific plans: Bush had shallow promises.

Bush’s Debate Performance

-> Bush had a record of failure to defend, and he failed to defend it.

-> Bush refused to take responsibility for his go it alone rush to war. He seemed defensive, annoyed and arrogant.

-> Bush had no plan, no clue for ending the chaos; he’s out of touch with reality.

-> Bush can’t fix the mess in Iraq because he pretends things are fine. Pretending is no substitute for planning.

150. A COUNTRY OF BUMBLING IDIOTS?
I think not. Republican spinners are saying BUSH's mediocre performance "speaks to the average person, they can relate to how he talks." Oh yeah? We may have our share of backward people in this country, but I give most Americans a little more credit than that. AS KERRY SAYS: WE CAN DO BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

80. Here's my letter to the editor of as many papers I can send it to
Dear Editor,

The first Presidential debate was an amazing expose of the differences between the two candidates. I believe for once in this campaign we were able to view, not through the prism of 30 second sound bites, but through face to face (or lectern to lectern) comparisons on how the candidates view foreign affairs. It was most revealing.
George Bush, looking for the most part like a toad who had just swallowed a lemon, tirelessly repeating the same trite answers in a sort of Karlrovian response mantra that started to wear thin pretty quickly. It became more and more strikingly obvious as John Kerry's responded to questions directly and intelligently.Meanwhile, Bush's answers somehow left you scratching your head and trying to figure out which question this guy was actually answering.
As the debate wore on, Kerry seemed to be more on point while Bush started drifting further from the subject on hand
If Bush was trying to make Kerry indecisive, he instead made himself look confused as he was trying to remember his rehearsal talking points and repeated them ad nauseum. His usual tactic of reframing questions to his advantage became painfully obvious. The President looked decidedly unpresidential and Kerry looked like he was in control of the facts.
The ultimate insult for Bush was at the end of the debate when Jim Lehrer had to help Bush articulate his views on the question of nuclear proliferation.
Any doubts I had on who to vote for were dismissed tonight-and it won't be for the incumbent with the "mexed missages".

84. Debate
Just checked the MSNBC polling website (of course I voted for
Kerry), but the results showed Kerry 90+% vs Bush >10%. I
can only hope that this is a valid poll. Having watched the
debate, Kerry came across by far the most presidential and
most informed candidate.

2. Boilerplate storyline- will media use GOP CW, or a liberal one like below?
Compare this Liberal pre-Debate "boilerplate" to the one the AP had -

does anyone think our liberal press will use something like this rather than the AP's GOP rewrite/spin of "conventional wisdom"?

One of the ways Kerry energized his base was with anti-Iraq war voice that avoided nuance in favor of a few clear, bumper sticker, crisp messages.

Kerry's likability gap shrunk as the joint appearance of two affable candidates showed there was not a major difference in likability.

Kerry managed to strike the right tone as he put Bush on the defensive on the war, health care, the economy, etc. without appearing to be bullying a President that Americans seem to like.

But this was a night for Foreign policy, and Kerry's connecting Iraq spinning out of control with how Bush squandered an opportunity to pursue Osama bin Laden with full global support by alienating long-time US allies and dissipating US troop strength was met by Bush's assertions that Iraq is not spinning out of control and that Kerry is a cut and run defeatist.

Bush's question of just what would Kerry do differently, and how can we trust him to actually do what he says was met by Kerry's "Just because Bush asserts something is true does not make it true" and "Refusing to change course in the face of disaster is not a character trait America needs in a leader".

AP Boiler Plate release at 1 pm by the AP is below- The links below worked until 5pm (ABC) and 7 pm (Boston Globe) LOL

Boston Globe posted before 2 pm and it is now after 5pm! LOL And ABC just took it off their site (5pm).

EDIT: GLOBE took it off Boston.com at 7 pm.

Bush and Kerry meet in first of three debates with Kerry needing to make up ground
By Terence Hunt, Associated Press, 9/30/2004 13:47

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) After a deluge of campaign speeches and hostile television ads, President Bush and challenger John Kerry got their chance to face each other directly Thursday night before an audience of tens of millions of voters in a high-stakes debate about terrorism, the Iraq war and the bloody aftermath.

The 90-minute encounter was particularly crucial for Kerry, trailing slightly in the polls and struggling for momentum less than five weeks before the election. The Democratic candidate faced the challenge of presenting himself as a credible commander in chief after a torrent of Republican criticism that he was prone to changing his positions.

Bush was expected to confront questions about leading the nation into war on the still-unproven premise that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He also has faced accusations that he lacked a strategy to deal with the violence and chaos that have left more than 1,000 Americans dead and that the Iraq war has diverted U.S. attention from al-Qaida and other terrorists.

With a record of four years in office to defend, Bush had a debate strategy of being optimistic about Iraq but acknowledging that times were tough. His stance is that Americans know he is a decisive leader even if they don't always agree with his decisions and that Kerry has taken conflicting positions on Iraq and can't be trusted to lead the nation. <snip>

and I'm sure they'll do call-ins afterwards. It's hard to get through on their lines on Washington Journal every morning but DUers have often managed.

I can post the telephone numbers for tonight's show when they give them. I'm watching the pre-debate show on C-SPAN but the numbers they used on it may be different from what they'll use later. Right now they're showing the commission members speaking to the audience before the debate.

Donna Shalala now speaking. It's nearly showtime, folks!

C-SPAN will show a split screen for the entire debate. (Hope that doesn't mean we miss the handshake, LOL!)

...from a new member!

Position yourself, in any email replies or telephoned commentaries, as a regular viewer of the outlet to whom you are directing your comments. It greatly increases the likelihood that your position will be considered or read on the air. A compliment to the presenters in the text also warms the cockles of their media whore hearts!

Fingers crossed, I am confident...lift off in ten minutes!

9. Well today i was asked by the members of my local Democratic Party's
Leadership (what is it called again, the executive comittee, anyway, they are elected
party officials) to be in charge of my polling district and run all of the programs to
contact all of the registered democrats in the area). Arranging to get people rides to
vote, and on election day co-ordinate telephone calls to people who have not voted
as we get updated voting lists during the day. They also want me to try to clarify
Kerry's position and one of the party executives recommended me to the democratic
mayor of the area as being very capable of explaining Kerry's positions in a simple
manner and that I have come up with a number of 30 second sound bites that
would be good to use with security moms etc (things like, "Do you want to feel
secure, or do you want to BE secure" .

I need a little encouragement here and I dont feel up to the task as I think that all they
find capable is the kind of arguing skills I have displayed on DU, which I think have been
more abrasive than persusive. I dont quite know if I am a good choice, but I have to give
an answer tomorrow night. I certainly will lend my abilities doing research for them for
speeches and telephone scripts. I will also do all the telephone banking that they want
but I dont know if I have any sort of leadership skills that being in charge of thr efforts for an entire polling district would take.

Any suggestions?

110. Two things
First, it doesn't take argumentation skills to be persuasive. Do you believe John Kerry is the best person for the job? Tell them why you do. An honest answer that comes from the heart will be far more persuasive than a series of pat answers.

Look at Bush v. Kerry tonight. Kerry had control of his facts; Bush had memorized lines and Kerry trounced him.

Second, leadership comes from strong core values. You obviously have them already or you wouldn't be here worrying about it. Just get out there and do it.

Say what you are feeling in your heart one time, then move on to the next thing. Don't waste time repeating yourself because your audience will get it the first time. Above all, be your charming, smart, likeable self.

121. Thanks
Thats what the people on the exec comittee said. that I seemed to feel very strongly about Kerry as a leader and as an honest person, and that I had a very good ability to condense what Kerry means, why he has been consistant on the war in Iraq and the War on terrorism since the very beginning, even before the Iraq resolution was passed, I was able to explain both his op-ed piece in the times and the speech before the CRF in January 2003 in such very short, but precise terms that a non politician could really understand and accept..

Well I will give it a shot.

Thanks for the encouragement.

That is my subject heading that I sent out all morning. Xultar, thanks for the easy cut and paste listing. It really saved me alot of time. Here's is my letter:

Last night’s Presidential Debate was a stunning defeat for the Bush/Cheney campaign. Kerry did a superb job getting his message across while Bush muddled around in repetitive rhetoric.

Kerry proved to be every bit the veteran statesman. He was cool, calm, composed, and eloquent. He presented facts and he presented his plans. He spoke with substance and integrity.

Bush, on the other hand, was impatient, defensive, and angry. All Bush could do was hem and haw over the same tiring set phrases. He has no clear plan to get out of Iraq. He could not answer some questions and got testy or took excessively long pauses in his speech. And this is supposed to be his forte?? This is not a video game. People are getting killed every day and Bush gives us superficial rhetoric at a time when the American people deserve honesty and substance.

I am simply stunned. President Bush is not just a bad debater. He is a bad leader who lacks substance. He couldn’t run away from Kerry fast enough after the initial handshake and he ran off the stage after the debate. It would be amusing if it weren’t so tragic. Bush lost the election last night.

Sincerely,

14. I just added talking points
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 09:27 PM by Skinner

38. Done, but look at this:
Kerry's ahead in changing minds while still losing the 'who won' question.

Who won?

Bush 53, Kerry 47

Did it change your mind?

No, 73%
Yes, will vote Kerry: 16%
Yes, will vote Bush: 11%

Also consider that AOL has a rural bias because the countryside is more dial-up than the cities and suburbs.

48. This was as I so humbly predicted
As my daughter just announced: "That was so incredibly vindicating."

Kerry showed his true leadership, intelligence and grasp of the issues. Chimpy Bunnypants showed us a virtual plethora of new and uncomfortable facial expressions and obtuse word combinations.

I am so proud of John Kerry. He never backed down, but he was a gentleman, and he never interrupted or got "testy' as * did during numerous responses.

Bunnypants appeared to have just sucked on a real SOUR pickle.

The spin is crap, so don't listen to it. Any sane person knows who aced this one.

CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT KERRY!

The elderly lady who lives upstairs, and who almost never leaves her apartment, came down and knocked on my door.

"Our boy did great tonight, didn't he?"

We shared a glass of wine, and she went home to bed, brightly smiling.

A very good night.

120. AOL -- Vote: Who Would Keep Us Safer?
If you visit the AOL poll on who won the debate (http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/elections/article.adp?id=20040930112609990001#polls), don't forget to also voice your opinion at the link right next to it: "Vote: Who Would Keep Us Safer?" You can also get to those questions by simply scrolling down the page.
I know someone else already mentioned this, but I wanted to point it out again, since Kerry is leading in the "Who Won" poll, but trailing in each of the "Who would keep us safer" questions -- which, when you think about it, doesn't make sense mathematically. :)

I voted a couple of dozen times on the msnbc poll, but I can only clear cookies manually and re-do the pages just so quick.... against 120,000 votes, that requires a robot.

118. What A Killer Debate...
Kerry was obviously saving it up. Forceful, decisive, had a rational answer for everything. Confident, direct, honest. Didn't know he had it in him. A killer good debater.

Brought up the subject of judgement. Brilliant as (bad) judgement has been passed off as "steadfastness."

We saw our next president tonight.

Bush was the used car salesman deluxe. Thank god the podium mike picked up his pounding on the lectern. He doesn't realize how much damage this sound bite will do subliminally to derail his campaign. Hunched over as if he was trying to sell us something (recycled cow flop?) Visibly frustrated and/or flabbergasted. No imagination. Nothing new- the same tired mantra over and over.Showed the same brilliant command of English he's always had.

Two more like this and he will be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

He looked like a campfire weenie on a stick.

I am starting to feel genuine enthusiasm for our candidate.

127. THANKS FOR THE LINKS
It was a pleasure spending the last hour or more e-mailing the media and doing all the polls. It was so sad in 2000 watching the mass media spin a Gore win into a Bush victory. Great to have some practical business to conduct to counteract that force.

JOHN KERRY WAS GREAT was my main message. He was intelligent, resolute, compassionate and strong. He was compassionate for respectfully challenging the President on the facts-- Osama flip, Iraq WMD flip, N Korea flip, Iran flip, Homeland Security flop... And he offered intelligent solutions.

BUSH, by contrast,SEEMED TIRED AND CONFUSED. He ummed and awed and kept repeating tired old phrases like an RNC Toothpaste Commercial. And he kept saying "It's a hard job..." and "It's a tough job..." Well, Mr. President, yes, the job is too tough for you-- we need a President like John Kerry who understands military strategy from the inside, has been fighting international terrorism for years, knows the importance of international relations, and will move the country forward to energy independence.

And I asked some of the journalists I e-mailed to please have the courage to tell the truth that Kerry won and resist the RNC toothpaste commercial.

Was that the one in Tulsa? I think it's still sort of reversed from most of the others I've seen. Something like 63% Bush... But OK is fairly Bush-y country, I guess. 158. "... no doubt he can lead the fight to hunt and kill the terrorists"
I was disturbed when Kerry said this -- "kill the terrorists" -- and I am disturbed to see it offered here as a talking point.

Kerry has demonstrated commitment to the rule of law in international affairs, with his unpopular support of the International Criminal Court (for which I laud him). He has also expressed respect for the opinion of the community of nations (ditto).

A promise to "kill the terrorists" seems inconsistent with those values. It seems more consistent with the Bush administration's approach to the rights of people it doesn't like (cf. "enemy combattants").

Even the term "hunt" is dehumanizing and inconsistent with liberal / democratic / progressive values. (And no, I don't really care how "inhuman" terrorists' acts are; terrorists aren't liberal or democratic or progressive, and what they do does not control how we react to them.)

Accused terrorists have human rights. The right to life and not to be deprived thereof without due process is one of those rights. Individual self-defence is a widely (although not universally) recognized justification for permitting killing, and killing in collective self-defence (killing in the course of war) is similarly recognized.

But in both cases, there must be justification -- the killing must be demonstrably reasonable and necessary in self-defence. Starting out with the stated goal of killing tends to preclude subsequent claims to have killed in self-defence.

Apprehending and punishing criminals, including terrorists, are valid goals. Killing someone engaged in an attempt to kill one's self or members of one's group is justified. But we do not "hunt and kill" people, not in societies under the rule of law, and not if we expect support in the court of international public opinion.

I would rather Kerry had not said this, but I recognize that things get said in extemporaneous speech that might not be said on sober second thought.

But I really do not see how using this statement as a talking point is consistent with Kerry's, or liberal / democratic / progressive, commitment to the rule of law and to engaging with the global community.

159. We need to keep this up! Keep it going!
I am going to keep on emailing, writing, calling - whatever. Bush lost and everyone needs to know it! Keep this up, DU'ers. Those polls out there don't stand a chance!

This is thrilling! We are all pulling together to win this thing. This is AWESOME! DU, you are AWESOME!

160. Conspiracy of silence?
I must say that the overwhelming approval of Kerry in all the polls that I've looked at makes me think that the Bush supporters just aren't voting.

171. Debora Norville Daily Show Interview
Is anyone watching this? It's painful. She's interviewing the writers on the show and Steve Colber and Samantha Bee and I think they're all getting very good material from Norville. I think Chris Rose would be a better format for The Daily Show writers and correspondents.
