Eisenhower's Son Endorses Kerry

Another View:
Why I will vote for John Kerry for President
By JOHN EISENHOWER
Guest Commentary

THE Presidential election to be held this coming Nov. 2 will be one of extraordinary importance to the future of our nation. The outcome will determine whether this country will continue on the same path it has followed for the last 3½ years or whether it will return to a set of core domestic and foreign policy values that have been at the heart of what has made this country great.

<snip>

As son of a Republican President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, it is automatically expected by many that I am a Republican. For 50 years, through the election of 2000, I was. With the current administration’s decision to invade Iraq unilaterally, however, I changed my voter registration to independent, and barring some utterly unforeseen development, I intend to vote for the Democratic Presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry.

The fact is that today’s “Republican” Party is one with which I am totally unfamiliar. To me, the word “Republican” has always been synonymous with the word “responsibility,” which has meant limiting our governmental obligations to those we can afford in human and financial terms. Today’s whopping budget deficit of some $440 billion does not meet that criterion.

2. Aw, c'mon. Give this thread some love.
The son is carrying on the "fight the military industrial complex" family tradition.

3. Ron Reagan JR, John Eisenhower, who can we get next?
I heard all the excuses from the Pubs about Ron Reagan, and how he was always an embarrassment to his family, but what are they going to say about John Eisenhower?

Let's see, who can we get from the Pubs next...Cheney's daughter?

The republican party may as well be call the "Christian evangelical fundamentalist " party, this is the immovable force of about 45% of the voters now a days.

7. Is this the son
who is married to Nixon's daughter? Great news!!! Eisenhower was only a mediocre president, but he was truly popular in his day. I have an "I Like Ike" button! I got it from an elderly relative and have kept it just because it is historical and it is also a collectors item!

is easy to get these dynasty's confused! There is actually a book about political dynasties that I am hoping to read soon--maybe it will help me keep them all straight.

28. yes--the last time
I checked was a while ago--it was worth $800 at that time! I bet that in the early 1950's they sold it for a penny or a nickel or something like that? I got a lot of fantastic things from this relative, she was a real collector!

their party/ideology should long ago have reached the same conclusions.

14. Very nicely written article.
There is nothing bombastic or hateful.

It just states, in a simple and polite way, the man's views.

I would bet he is a genteleman. His writing makes him sound like one.

22. Do you think this will hit the mainstream media?
Or will the talking heads ignore this gem? I have incredible respect for someone like this... unlike Zell Miller, who is going into republican territory, this man is doing it with class, and with reason.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and their vote... but the ones that cross over with the most noble of intentions, and reasoned background, are the ones to watch.

Oh.. if we ONLY had a real media again, then creatures like Diane Sawyer would be interviewing that man, instead of insinuating Kerry is elitist because he windsurfs, instead of clearing brush.

Ike never really liked the GOP and actually considered leaving it at one point; I think he would be sick if he saw the party today.

25. This is important because it is the major newspaper in a small state
that would have given Gore the election in 2000. And I still believe that most of the people in New Hampshire are thinking people to whom this commentary will appeal. We know the New Hampshire folks are very independent minded.
