NPR covered the VPs
Yesterday it was Edwards and I only caught the tale end of it, seemed good though. Today they covered Cheney and I guess he will not let NPR or some other chosen news stations to travel with him and would not give an interview. So they covered his using the F*** word and getting money for Haliburton, lying about the Iraq war and other things that are true. I thought it was great! He should have given an interview! NPR redeemed themselves today in my eyes! Did anyone else hear it?

1. I heard it - it was pretty good

Covered the $2 million he's received from Halliburton while in office, and how Halliburton has gone from #19 in Pentagon contracts to #1. Covered the f-word to Leahy and the implication that a Kerry win would mean another terror attack. Talked about how he blacklists news orgs he doesn't like such as NPR and NY Times. Mentioned the secret Energy Panel documents.

2. I thought it was bad
The first 3/4 of the segment was repeating Cheney's sound bites about John Kerry. "We are more likely to be attacked" "Kerry changes positions with the political wind" etc NPR did nothing to correct these distortions instead they focused on "Go CHENEY yourself" which though embarrassing has nothing to do with policy decisions and the lies and distortions the * campaign is putting out there.

They should really analyze cheney's statements and show where they are untrue. i.e we were attacked on *'s watch so why would it be more likely under a Kerry administration? and How Kerry has been consistent on voting for authorization but does not like what * has done with that authority. etc. etc. etc.

just my 2 cents

3. Not what it sounded like to me
I heard them giving Cheney all the rope he needed to hang himself and then letting him twist in the wind as the segment proceeded. By the end of the interview it definitely came down as an attempt to give a balanced perspective that inevitably found Cheney on the short end.

I think the tactic of isolating Cheney from everyone except the hand picked audiences at his campaign stops is required to keep him out of trouble, but it's also making him a target. NPR just took their shot.

5. You are right in the heart of Cheney-land
Do you remember when Cheney spent the entire month of August 2001 hiding out in Jackson Hole shortly after he learned Al Queda attacks on the U.S. were imminent?

8. He is seriously unpopular with a lot of folks here
He displays an arrogant disregard for values that are of concern to lots of people living here. Last summer he repeatedly landed a whole flight of Blackhawks in close proximity to a protected area where Trumpeter Swans and Osprey nest. He scared a nesting pair of Osprey off their nest and their eggs; the parents came back, but often times they don't. This summer he wanted to fish and view wildlife on the Snake. His detail flew very low over another protected area within GTNP, startling Bald Eagles and moose. He does this stuff over and over and ignores local efforts to mitigate the behavior. He's got a big freaking MacMansion on the Teton Pines golf course right on a fairway - we can't see why he doesn't just land there. That's where he was when he was hiding out.

He really raised some hackles when he declard Wyoming to be his 'home' state. He's had property around here for years, but he doesn't and has never lived here. He needed a home state other than Texas for electoral college reasons, so he just decided that he lives here. Now he behaves like he's a 'native'. I've lived and worked here 15 years but I'd never claim to be anything but a newcomer - it takes a couple of generations to be considered 'local' in parts of the culture.

He has his supporters in the community, Teton County may be the most liberal part of the state, but that's not saying much in Wyoming. His arrogance is losing him a lot of support, though.

4. And when they talked about John Edwards being a "no show" or whatever
Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 09:47 AM by AP
they should have admitted that part of the reason the media doesn't touch him is because they're know that if they do, it'll help the ticket a lot.

Just because he's campaigning in Parkersberg, West Nowhere, doesn't mean national media isn't required to cover him. Regardless of where Edwards goes, the national media is allowed to follow. They just don't want to.

10. Right again, AP. Also, I give NPR NO kudos today. They played
a long clip of a Bush campaign speech, along with a few comments of their own, and I was sure it would be followed by a quick story about Kerry on the campaign trail, too. But no, they then switched to a completely unrelated story. Fair and balanced...

7. They reported that
He only has 6 seats on his plane and he has to rotate, but they also said he doesn't take reporters that ask the "rude" questions. He probably only has Fox and conservative papers filling those seats.
Lol!

9. NPR and NYT are non grata
on the Cheney plane. Apparently they have to do some detective work to even know where he's going so that they can get there on their own.
