'Nobel Peace Prize for Obama' (Irish Times leader) - True, I'm biased, but I LOVE this

Nobel Peace Prize for Obama

THERE IS, in the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama, a potent, symbolic echo of that awarded in 1919 to the last US president in office to win it. Woodrow Wilson had seen emerging out of the tragic bloodbath of the first World War a new moral imperative, the crying need for global, co-ordinated action against war, specifically the creation of an institutional forum through which the nations of the world could settle their differences, the League of Nations. Wilson won the award largely for his efforts to create the league though, ironically, he would lose the battle with Republicans back at home to prevail on the US to join it.

Fast forward. Today, it is precisely Mr Obama’s Wilsonian contribution to re-engaging the US with multilateral diplomacy, with its “emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play”, which is cited by the Norwegian Nobel Committee as the key rationale for its bold and welcome decision. “Obama has, as president, created a new climate in international politics,” the committee argues with much justification. Or in other words, though not stated, he has turned the page on what the committee, reflecting its European perspective, would have seen as the malign Bush years.

It also praised the importance of his “vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons” in kickstarting disarmament negotiations and his part in giving a new hope to the Copenhagen climate change talks process. Mr Obama’s important engagement with Islam in his Cairo speech will certainly also have played its part in the committee’s decision.

Premature? The award has created controversy worldwide. There have been some grudging responses to the announcement. Mr Obama, speaking at the UN General Assembly at his first appearance there last month, admitted his work is only beginning. “I have been in office for just nine months, though some days it seems a lot longer,” he told world leaders. Hold on, the critics say, he’s only just in office, his efforts to bring the parties together in the Middle East have borne little fruit and North Korea and Iran are showing little sign of giving up their nuclear ambitions. He is leading a country which is embroiled in what many see as two unwinnable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is definitely pot-half-empty territory.

Yet, in truth, although he may as yet have no treaties under his designer belt and most of the challenges he faces are still very much work in progress, Mr Obama’s achievements are substantive, and very real. American foreign policy has been set on a new course, multilateral diplomacy on issues like armaments has been given a new lease of life and the nature and language of international dialogue has been transformed. Like Al Gore’s, whose Nobel prize for campaigning on climate change preceded his by two years, Mr Obama’s award is about his creation of political possibilities and space, and the real power of ideas and personal example. The power, as Mr Obama himself would say, of hope.

(End)

4. Thanks Jackeens. But to me it's double edged; good and bad. I have to say..

Everyone in the world is more gracious, thankful, and kind about our President's win of the Nobel Peace Prize than his own nation. Fuckin' hell..it just brings home how disgusting the US of A can be. I mean I can't tell you how upset I have been broken in by coolness of posts by you, Prosense, Baby, Heckate, and others. Most of them have been upsetting, distressing, and just plain abhorrent. Our media lambasted our President, "he doesn't deserve it, he's hasn't earned." Other DUers pushing the meme across this board and arguing it. Even some people like jgraz who put Obama on tight reign, legitimately, gave their congrats and called on congrats. But others----I don't know. Thanks for this, but I'm still saddened to see that the world appreciates the US President than the American's he leads.

Edited for punctuation.

8. Hang on in there vaberella
What I always, always, always remind myself of at times like this is that empty vessels make the most noise - an auld cliche, but oh so true!

And, having read his books and 95,000 () books and articles on him and the Presidential campaign, I know he is as tough as nails went it comes to hate-filled criticism and abuse - he just brushes it away, and gets on with his job.

And when he goes out and about this is what he sees:

They're not, like me (:-)) hero-worshipers, they're just people who reckon he's their best chance of improving things.

And I'm sure that sustains him.

Again, remember, a majority of Americans are right behind him, it's just that the nutjobs are loud.

I promise, I keep reminding myself he's only a politician - at the prompting of a whole bunch of wise DUers! - so he'll probably disappoint us a heap of times. But I truly believe his heart is in the right place - and that, pretty much, is why I think he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

You're in the majority vaberella, take comfort from that. :toast:

7. The Irish have a way with the
words!:toast:Jackeens~ PO may be in Office only a short time but he and his Team have been working fast to get this ship turned around.

This Noble Peace Prize is a "Call To Action" and I'm glad it was entrusted to President Obama.

This was in his letter to everyone today after he won and I know he means every word.

"This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come."
:cry::)

11. I'm glad you're happy Jackeens
My take on it is that anyone who is disgruntled by this has not realized that the prize also belongs to the country that elected Obama.

He would not have received this, had he not been our President. The award is his and ours. The US should be proud that it finally had the sense to move away from eight years of confrontation; being openly hostile to every country that had our differences with us.

I have my issues with Obama, as you well know.

The Nobel Peace Prize is not one of them. I like having America back in the right hands and moving more in synch with the rest of the world.

13. Couldn't agree more ruggerson, this is an award for all the people who worked to get him elected...
...and, therefore, said 'no' to four more years of the same.

I hope that this is how it will be received - at the risk of sounding hopelessly corny: I see it as a very big thank you from the rest of the world.

14. My first reaction
when I heard it was to think of that "We're sorry, world" website that went viral after Bush was reelected.

I agree, this is the world expressing appreciation and welcoming the US back to the fold.

12. Excellent article. Seems the Irish have adopted our Prez, and that makes me happy.
I think Teddy Kennedy (RIP) might have had a great deal to do with that. Thanks for posting.

19. They make a claim on him the way Kenya does
I venture to say like they adopted Kennedy, too. From that country, there's a view that the US is full of Irish people's descendants, and the Prez is one of them. Barack O'Bama!

24. They wrote a song claiming him. If you haven't heard it yet,
it's great fun and I'm sure Obama loved it. Obama, when he was in Ireland told the people there that he has Irish ancestors, and naturally, they claimed him right away.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4qDEf3fVds

While Kenya tried to claim him as one of their own, the Irish have gone one better ... and written a song about him being Irish.

After it was revealed the Obama roots could be traced to 18th century Ireland, the Irish band 'Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys' wrote a song about it.

"O'Leary, O'Reilly, O'Hare and O'Hara, There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama," they sing in a video which has become a hit on YouTube.

It was discovered that Obama had ancestors who in the 1700s lived in a village called Moneygall in County Offaly, Ireland.

If you want to sing along (and why wouldn't you) here are some of the lyrics ... enjoy.

No one as Irish as Barack OBama

O'Leary, O'Reilly, O'Hare and O'Hara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama

You don't believe me, I hear you say
But Barack's as Irish, as was JFK
His granddaddy's daddy came from Moneygall
A small Irish village, well known to you all

Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama
There's no one as Irish As Barack O'Bama

He's as Irish as bacon and cabbage and stew
He's Hawaiian he's Kenyan American too
He’s in the white house, He took his chance
Now let’s see Barack do Riverdance

Toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a loo, toor a lama
There's no one as Irish As Barack O'Bama

And, being that it's an Irish song, there are lots more lyrics.

15. This won't change the minds of the whiners and doubters, but...
it's so good to see it in print.

While it pains me that even on our own side we see the complainers, it is thrilling to see some in the world agreeing with us that a new age is dawning, and that this country has come full circle in my lifetime to once again become a beacon of light.

It's not all Obama that did this, but he is there to take the credit and the blame, so let no one deny him the credit.

Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 10:50 PM by rebel with a cause
Is the Ireland landscape as beautiful as the pictures I have seen of it? And is the political climate there more liberal than conservative?

I have always wanted to visit there and now my daughter wants to just as much. I'm hoping that life will allow her to do the traveling that I never got to do, and I hope she can someday see Ireland.

Edited to add: Also, thank you for all the pictures of Obama and family. I usually come on the DU to see if there is anything new from you.
