BREAKING, errr, same ol': 1500 dead civilians in Afghanistan in 09
The Peace Prize is bullshit. It obscures what actually has occurred under this president's term, and all the back-slapping around here is killing me.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) recorded 1,500 Afghan CIVILIAN DEATHS between January 1 and August 31, 2009, representing an increase of 31% over the same period in 2008, when 1,145 civilians were killed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilian_casualties_of_the... (2001%E2%80%93present

There have been 1,951 CIVILIAN DEATHS in Iraq in 2009 as a result of the war.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_War

Simply being way, way, way better than Bush isn't enough, even if the rest of the world is finally starting to exhale. I know it wasn't Obama's mess--and cleaning up ain't easy and all that--but this president supports policies that kill innocent people.

Peace.
(Real peace.)

7. Forget the dead little kids? You remind me of abortion protesters.
If we left Afghanistan immediately, war would still rage and kids would still die. Grow up.

9. More dead babies Oregone?
Your obsession with the dead infants borders on the macabre. If we left Afghanistan today, war would still rage there and babies would still die.

8. people in Afghanistan are dying today because of lies and errors 5 and 6 yrs
ago. Don't play fast and loose with the facts. You are no better than the fucktard conservatives blaming our economic malaise on Obama despite years of Bushie folks work to make it happen.

What I'm saying is this is disengenuous and timed to pull away from the real facts of how Obama is engaging with the world. It doesn't happen overnight.

P.S. You cannot erase the fact that the failed state of Afghanistan and the Taliban are what helped al queda be able to pull off 9/11 and other subsequent attacks. Fixing Afghanistan is not just a U.S. priority.

Squelch dissent. Denigrate those who don't fall in line. High five your same-thinking buddies. Unrec.

"You are no better than the fucktard conservatives..."

12. Breaking: Obama is ending a war
Iraq: U.S. closed 100 bases, reduced contractors by 34,000 since Jan., pulling 4,000 more troops out

Obama is in the process of ending one war (which you and others prefer to ignore) and trying to decide the next steps in another. Wars he was not responsible for launching, but will be responsible for ending.

17. He is following Bush's SOFA agreement, yes...
For how long? Until the "conditions on the ground" change? I don't know. As of now it looks like its almost a shell game though, as he just shifts emphasis to Afghanistan (as yes, he said he would do)

But just one look at that enormous embassy doesn't make me believe one politician will have the guts to actually completely end it without being forced to. There is quite a bit invested there, and many people may want a decent return on it.

13. What sort of prizes does Al-Qaeda hand out, other than the exploding ones?
You figure the road to world peace & tranquility will be found by simply walking away from Afghanistan? It's a good thing you are in charge of nothing but your own thoughts.

19. By 'we' you of course mean, 'Americans'.
Because if all Americans were somehow magically transported out of Afghanistan today, there would still be hundreds, if not thousands, of deaths from war in the coming months in Afghanistan.

26. BREAKING-He always said he would concentrate on Afghanistan-that he's not against
ALL wars. He considers Afghanistan a just war. He also considers reaching out to the Muslim world very important, along with disarming the world of nuclear weapons. He has made our country most admired up from 7th place. That makes us ALL safer.

29. "this president supports policies that kill innocent people."
Please! If you can name war in all of the history of the world where innocent people weren't killed I'd be amazed. And even if we left Afghanistan today innocent people would keep on being killed.

31. nope, can't name one war in which an innocent wasn't killed...
and that's the fucking point.

leave Afghanistan now and war of some sort will continue, but it actually makes a difference whether you or I or our president is contributing to the bloodshed--or not. Peace Prizes should go to the "or not" crowd.

Orwell would've loved this year's Nobel.

Peace.
