Poll: Corzine catches Christie in NJ gov's race
TRENTON, N.J. - A new poll finds the top two candidates for New Jersey governor running nearly even.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University-PublicMind Poll out Tuesday has Gov. Jon Corzine at 44 percent, Republican challenger Chris Christie at 43 percent. The difference is within the poll's margin of error.

A September poll had Christie ahead, 47-42 percent.

The new poll finds 54 percent have an unfavorable view of Corzine, the same as last month. Forty-two percent now have an unfavorable opinion of Christie, up from 35 percent in September.

Four percent volunteered that they support independent Chris Daggett. But Daggett's support climbs to 17 percent when his name is read with the other two.

3. Simple... The more people know about Christie, the worse he looks.
He is one of those "loyal bushie" US Attorneys circa Gonzales.

6. And we know what it took for even Republicans to keep those jobs. Korzine should bring in Iglesias
to tell it like it was. http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/330/david-iglesias.html (D of J pressured Iglesias to engage in unlawful activities)

4. Christie will defeat himself. His own record will overtake his publicity
campaign - I just saw a Corzine ad 2 minutes ago hammering Christie's record voting against public education, healthcare and every social program possible. He's a pig, would be a disaster for NJ - I'd expect refugees here in PA if he were elected.
Rec.

5. Great! The more you get to know them, the less appealing they are.
The Palin Effect.

Go, Korzine!

9. In this race, it takes away from Christie the Repub because
the independent seems more right leaning. Its is good for Corzine.

14. According to the poll, Daggett polls twice as many Dems as pubs..
Edited on Tue Oct-06-09 12:50 PM by Kahuna
Edited after I actually read the poll:

"When Daggetts name is read in an interview along with Jon Corzines and Chris Christies
name, Corzine leads Christie 38%-37% and Daggett gets 17% of the vote. Daggett
attracts twice as many Democrats as Republicans."

I guess this is good for Corzine because the support of indies usually dissipates on election day. Hopefully, it will mean that those Dems saying they will vote for Daggett will hold their noses and vote for Corzine.

16. I just edited my post. It actually helps Corzine because Daggetts
supporters are Dems, not pubs. Read the poll. If the majority of those supporting Daggett were repubs, that would be a plus for christie not, Corzine, because at least half of them would hold their nose and vote for their party candidate.

17. Thanks for the info.
I really hope he pulls it out.
We have a Repub Gov here in CT but at least she is a moderate/liberal Repub. Christie is so extreme.

18. Yep! I was discouraged when I thought Daggett's supporters were..
pubs. But now that I know they are Dems, I feel a lot better. I live in NJ. It matters to me.

13. he's a former Republican
he strikes me as a Ron Paul type, so he's more of a danger to Christie :-)

10. I'm not in New Jersey but Democrats there have reason to be encouraged
by Corzine's comeback. Christie is bad news, start to finish, and I deepy hope we won't be seeing him on the political landscape in any shape or form or capacity.

Go, Jon Corzine.

12. Half the time period the sample was collected over was after the debate
so that may have had some effect. (here's the blue jersey live blog - worth looking at if you are interested.
http://www.bluejersey.com/diary/12904/liveblogging-the-... Christie really showed himself to be, what Morris County Democrats saw when he was freeholder here - and obnoxious person with no real plans. The Daggett plan that shifts costs from property tax to sales tax might be a regressive shift, but it is not clear to me what services will be taxed - there must be many as that is a lot of money to raise. Property taxes are very high and that is a Republican issue every election - so he might be stealing Christie's voters.)

It might also mean that Christie's emotional ad saying his mom survived breast cancer and was with him for another 20 years and that Corzine was lying when he said that Christie would deny women mammograms backfired - because Corzine was correct that Christie eliminating mandates of what should be in insurance could cause women to lose that coverage. (Corzine never said Christie would "prevent" women from getting them.) I would guess if you want to play that kind of "he was unfair" card, you better be 100% able to show it wrong -- instead, nothing could have given MORE publicity to the fact that he would indeed remove these mandates.
