Steele: Michelle should handle Olympics
By ANDY BARR | 9/29/09 12:41 PM EDT .

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Tuesday that while it is “noble” for President Barack Obama to travel to Copenhagen to make the pitch for Chicago’s 2016 Summer Olympics bid, it’s an initiative the first lady should be heading up, not the commander-in-chief.

“This trip, while nice, is not necessary for the president,” Steele said on a conference call with reporters. “If is that important, Mr. President, then stay home and get it done.

“The first lady should have been the lead here,” Steele continued. “Let her go and sell Chicago.”

Steele pointed out that country remains mired in a recession and in “a time of war,” though he would not say Obama had made a “mistake” in choosing to make the trip.

“Mistake is in the eye of the holder,” Steele said.

Asked again by a reporter if the president was making a mistake, Steele shot back, “I gave you my answer."

comments, Gibbs asked "Well, who is he rooting for?"

11. That's accurate on so
many levels.

Gibhs has some good Zingers in him. Remember when he first started and there was so much discussion around here whether he was up to the job or not?

24. They had their arguments ready
Plan A if he didn't go: How dare he NOT support the U.S. bid, sending a woman to do his job.

Plan B if he went: How dare he go when there are so many pressing issues (that we don't want resolved if he will get credit)

26. I've been hearing the 'how dare he go" talking point all day. It's a ridiculous
notion that the President isn't doing any work unless he's sitting in the Oval Office.

And it's very amusing how the GOP are suddenly concerned with urgent issues about Afghanistan, which they ignored for 8 years.

and the "Western Whitehouse" or all of those Camp David trips or Bush giving McCain a cake while NOLA residents died after Katrina. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

3. Question for Michael Steele: "Are you an asshole?"
Michael Steele: "An asshole is in the eye of the beholder."

Follow-up question: "Are you TRYING to be an asshole?"

Steele: "...damn, you got me there."

8. I don't know who he should have sent....
... but it sure would have be better for us if he had stayed here and used the bully pulpit to get this healthcare reform done, WITH a public option. It leaves me with the appearance that getting the Olympics for Chicago is more important than the crucial negotiations going on in congress right now. Or that he is basically willing to sign whatever congress passes. He sure doesn't appear to want to be part of the decision making process.

The "appearance" that you're refering to is coming from the fearmongering hate machines..so fuck 'em if they can't handle a capable president.

34. Last I checked, a person can only be on one place at a time
We'll see how capable he is when congress passes health care reform without a public option. Of course those enthrall with Obama rather than a true democratic agenda will then busily telling us that the crap we smell doesn't really stink. Or better yet, that smells like roses. And roundly chastising those of us who don't agree. I have no doubt.
