Too late for ACORN?

September 16, 2009 by Bob Collins

The ACORN scandal is mushrooming.

It started after BigGovernment.com, a site run by commentator Andrew Breitbart, sent a couple of kids into an ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) office to try to get funding for a prostitution ring. Hidden video revealed an intake worker ready to help.

For conservatives, it was proof of a story they claim mainstream media has been ignoring: that of a fraudulent organization tied to the president.

ACORN's response has been -- charitably put -- uneven. At first, according to a press release, the group said an intake worker was just kidding:

When the actors approached Ms. Kaelke with their provocative costuming and outlandish scenario, she could not take them seriously. So she met their outrageousness with her own personal style of outrageousness. She matched their false scenario with her own false scenarios.

But another press release today from ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis suggests now that they weren't:

"As a result of the indefensible action of a handful of our employees, I am, in consultation with ACORN's Executive Committee , immediately ordering a halt to any new intakes into ACORN's service programs until completion of an independent review. I have also communicated with ACORN's independent Advisory Council, and they will assist ACORN in naming an independent auditor and investigator to conduct a thorough review of all of the organizations relevant systems and processes. That reviewer, to be named within 48 hours, will make recommendations directly to me and to the full ACORN Board. We enter this process with a commitment that all recommendations will be implemented."

Said Ms. Lewis: "We have all been deeply disturbed by what we've seen in some of these videos. I must say, on behalf of ACORN's Board and our Advisory Council, that we will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust. For nearly forty years, ACORN has given voice to communities, and gotten results. Right now, our nearly 500,000 member are working their hearts out for quality, affordable healthcare for every American and to help stop the foreclosure crisis. We must get this process right, so the good work can go forward."

It may be too late. Earlier this week, the Senate voted to prevent the organization from getting -- and distributing -- any housing money..."

1. They should have done this when the first video appeared
This is a smart move. Some of their employees are fucked up and this shit needs to be dealt with.

2. Here is the story with a link

ACORN plans internal investigation

By SHARON THEIMER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON An advocacy group under fire after employees were caught on camera appearing to advise a couple posing as a prostitute and pimp to lie about the woman's profession said Wednesday it is ordering an independent investigation.

The group also said it is refusing new admissions into its service programs.

ACORN will work with its advisory council, which includes prominent supporters of President Barack Obama, such as John Podesta, president of the nonprofit Center for American Progress, and Andrew Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, to name an independent auditor and investigator, ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis said in a written statement.

<...>

The moves by ACORN, which stands for Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, come as some Republicans urge the Justice Department to investigate the group. In addition to the hidden-camera video, is under scrutiny for several voter-registration fraud cases.

3. WTF is wrong with these wimps
It should be pretty clear to everybody that the incidents that led up to this were setups and pretty amateur setups at that.

Last I heard some jurisdictions were even considering prosecution of the fake pimp and ho.

So it's been established that provocateurs were involved.

Why the hell is that any reason to "suspend operations"?

Once again the bullies have backed down the good guys and will be further emboldened to do it again.

5. Of course they were setups
but unless the tapes were COMPLETELY manufactured, and AFAIK there is not even an inkling of this so far, the reaction to the setup was for real, and that's where the problem is. I don't care to how many other offices they may have also gone to and were kicked out the door from or the police contacted, three with this kind of reaction is three (maybe two) too many.

6. I agree.
Bringing down ACORN has been an obvious goal of the RW. It's all about making Pres Obama indirectly look bad.

4. Good
but much of the harm is already done :-(, including legitimizing the poisonous idiots at Fox, Beck chief among them (I would not have believed a year ago that I will end up considering O'Reilly almost bearable, almost sane and smart by comparison!!).

7. Misleading subject line.
"Ordering a halt to any new intakes" is not the same as "Suspending operations".

All they are doing is temporarily suspending the advising of new clients, they are not totally shutting down operations.

I can't blame them for doing this. Even if it turns out that the employees' actions were completely innocent, they have to be very careful now because it's now obvious that there are people who are out to trick them in any way they can. They need to train their employees to be alert for tricks of any kind, something they probably never before thought was necessary.

Future tricks may be more sophisticated and not quite so obvious. Having to be on the lookout for this kind of nonsense will drain resources and make their jobs more difficult. So, in that sense at least, the right wing has achieved something here.

It's really disgusting that people who are trying to help those of us who have the least are being harassed by those who are better off. The people pulling this shit should be greatly ashamed of themselves, but apparently they know no shame.

10. +1
I wish they would do an investigation on some of the "advice" I hear offered out at my job. ACORN has done far more good than they have ever received credit for. A few bad apples doesn't spoil the entire bunch. But, at the end of the day, ACORN=BLACK PEOPLE=OBAMA :eyes:

14. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at some of the high priced legal firms.
Imagine the kinds of clients some of them are advising and the kinds of advise they're giving out.

I wonder how many times Faux News or Murdoch have gotten advice on how to fly under the legal radar?
