Carter: Race plays role in Obama dislike
Posted: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 6:44 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, former Democratic President Jimmy Carter attributed much of the conservative opposition that President Obama is receiving to the issue of race.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man," Carter said. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that share the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans."

Carter continued, "And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply."

20. The OP brings race into everything
It's transparent to everyone.

I wonder whether it's not a projection.

But I don't care anymore.

21. I do disagree with Carter's assessment that 'many' white people think blacks not qualified to lead..
President Carter might want to walk that one back. I do agree with his initial statement--“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man,”

“I live in the South, and I’ve seen the South come a long way, and I’ve seen the rest of the country that share the South’s attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans. “And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it’s bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It’s an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply.”

13. One of his points is that it isn't limited to the South.
Is Idaho in the South? Is Michigan in the South? Is western Pennsylvania in the South? Is Ohio in the South? Is Wyoming in the South? Is South Dakota in the South? Is Alaska in the South?

17. I think President Carter is being Too Kind: "Belief...that African-Americans are not qualified..."
IMHO, to 'them' it's not about being qualified, it's more about letting an African-American rise to such a high position and to have such authority.

Obama could be a genius, a decorated war hero, AND a Nobel prize winner, and they'd still choke on the idea of his being POTUS.

Racism doesn't come from a place of reason, it comes from a place of utter hatred.

I remember that it managed to produce Jimmy Carter. And one of him is worth a busload of Newts.
