Something profound for our country is happening now. We are finding ourselves with an opposition that might not want to finish this debate in a manner we could live with, and the pattern looks eerily like the civil war (at least to me).

If you don't believe me, do some research (it won't take much).

1. Do you mean during the War of Northern Aggression?
;-)

When I go to Atlanta, I used to say "I have a reservation at the General Sherman Hotel, where is it?"

But now I live in Texas, and "our" governor has endorsed secession.

2. American Idol will start soon.
We're to fat, lazy, and individualistic to ever have another revolution. This country will die very slowly over a long period of time. With a whimper not a bang.

3. what are we gonna do? Send our football players to fight you Yankees?
The south had virtually no ammo in the 19th century .... now we have even less.

..... yeah, our only bartering chip is football. lol

I can see it now, "Impeach Obama now or no more game day!"

4. But, you're referring to an organized rebellion.
I'm talking about an entirely UNorganized rebellion. Which makes it much harder to fight and much hard beat.

5. Gawd help us all if they start to emulate the Insurgents.
So far, they've been too stupid to figure it out, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.

6. There is something going on--keep an ear to the ground.
The Republicans can be crass and even bombastic.

This is different.

At other times, at least a few Republicans would
have stepped and tried to curb the whackiness.
I realize that both parties suffer from a lack
of real leaders on the Hill.

Instead of trying to bring some sanity, they are
affirming the behavior by acting almost like the
wingnuts. It is almost subtle encouraging the behavior.

Something is going on.

Bizarre legal theories about the 14th Amendment and open talk of secession is suddenly in vogue.

If the Rebs want a re-match, I'm in.

9. Truman was President when
I was born and I've seen and lived through quite a bit. I have never in any previous era seen this country as sharply divided as it is now.

10. True, Sir...
After the murder of President Lincoln, either Sumner's 'state suicide' or Stevens' 'conquest' doctrines should have been applied. Treason trials for all commissioned officers of the Confederate forces, from Lee on down, should have been conducted. All large land-holdings should have been thrown open under the Homestead Act to freedmen. We pay the price for this failure to this very day.
