Obama during primaries: "I don't believe there are a whole bunch of folks that won't get coverage"
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 10:09 PM by brentspeak
Obama while seeking our primary votes:

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/jul/20/barack-obama/obama-flip-flops-requiring-people-buy-health-care/

"It's true that some people could game the system by just waiting till they get sick and then they show up," Obama said. "But keep in mind that my plan also says children will be able to stay on their parents' plan up until the age of 25. And so I don't believe that there are a whole bunch of folks out there that will not get coverage. And John, both you and Hillary have a hardship exemption where, if people can't afford to buy health care, you exempt them so that you sort of don't count them."

Obama today, pushing for everyone to sign up for private health insurance:

Now, even if we provide these affordable options, there may be those--particularly the young and healthy--who still want to take the risk and go without coverage. ...That's why under my plan, individuals will be required to carry basic health insurance...

1. I think he's also defining what affordable means, though
which those who favored mandates in the primaries wouldn't do.

2. Whats wrong with everyone paying in. Wouldn't you have to do that with single payer?
.

3. Single-payer would be much less costly for everyone, and there would be no insurance companies

No middleman. And better quality health care.

There's your answer.

5. You don't know what the cost is going to be yet
And if anything this is an easy way to get people covered. Because if they can't afford the govt will provide it. He made that clear tonight

7. Of course the government will also be deciding who can and can't
afford private plans. And income caps set by the government rarely bare any relation to the real world.

Face, it we just heard Obama endorse the "Insurance Company Profit and Campaign Donation Protcetion Act of 2009" tonight.

8. I disagree totally. I'm leery and scared of what may happen, but I didn't hear an endorsement
of the "Insurance Company Profit and Campaign Donation Protcetion Act of 2009" tonight. Not even close.

We are not, and never were, going to get single payer, although I know some people were hoping. But Kucinich lost the nomination. No other candidates were supporting single payer. Clinton or Obama or Biden or any of them. Single payer was not an "option."

9. That's exactly what it is
and it's why single payer wasn't on the table.

4. But with single payer we wouldn't be forced to contribute to the
for profit companies with no guarantee that our access to their shoddy products will actual give us access to health care.

If all you can afford is a policy with high deductibles and copays you may still not be able to get the care you need.

10. Lame
A majority of young healthy people will opt out of there employers plan and will be able to satisfy the requirement via the public option. If they work for a small business it will be among the options on the exchange.
