OH MY, LA Times: Man bites off man's finger at Obama healthcare rally
Man bites off man's finger at Obama healthcare rally
September 3, 2009 | 12:04 am

Here's a weird little piece of late-breaking news about the nation's ongoing healthcare reform debate:

A 65-year-old man at a Wednesday night California rally supporting President Obama's embattled reform ideas had a finger bitten off during a scuffle with anti-reform protesters.
a Little Finger

Ventura County sheriff's deputies were called to the intersection of Lynn and Hillcrest Road in Thousand Oaks near Los Angeles, according to TV station KTLA.

There, an estimated 100 supporters of healthcare reform affiliated with MoveOn.org had gathered as part of a nationwide array of local pre-Labor Day rallies to attract attention in support of Obama's reform plans currently before Congress.

about where the biter and the bitee stand on the issue. But, I do know that it's effed up either way.

edit: earlier edit on post said this:

A scuffle ensued. And the pro-protester had a finger bitten off. (UPDATE: 8:18 a.m. Later reports indicate the 65-year-old man was the biter and the finger was younger.)

Then it was changed to this:

A scuffle ensued. And the pro-protester had a finger bitten off. (Updated at 8:18 a.m.: Conflicting later reports indicate the biter was a healthcare proponent and the now nine-fingered man an opponent.)

I happened to still have the original in an open window...

32. Yes, conflicting accounts, but a blogger who was there said the biter
was the pro-reform guy though the instigator was the anti-reform guy. Either way, the entire incident is disgusting.

30. Of course, regardless of which side he was on,
there's no excuse for biting off anyone's finger. We live in a violent society. People used to have an argument and at worst they would end up throwing punches. Now, they'll kill you for a dime. Kids are going to school with an arsenal of weapons. Boys used to be the aggressive ones, girls are now fast catching up.

Very disheartening if you ask me.

:-(

One has the Pro-Reformer as the biter, one the anti-reformer.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/09/heal...

A scuffle ensued. And the pro-protester had a finger bitten off. (UPDATE: 8:18 a.m. Later reports indicate the 65-year-old man was the biter and the finger was younger.)

http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-finger-bitten-ral...

A witness from the scene says a man was walking through the anti-reform group to get to the pro-reform side when he got into an altercation with the 65-year-old, who opposes health care reform.

The 65-year-old was apparently aggressive and hit the other man, who then retaliated by biting off his attacker's pinky, according to Karoli from DrumsnWhistles.

23. Yeah, there's two different description of events.
From AP:

Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Frank O'Hanlon says about 100 people demonstrating in favor of health care reforms rallied Wednesday night on a street corner. One protester walked across the street to confront about 25 counter-demonstrators.

O'Hanlon says the man got into an argument and fist fight, during which he bit off the left pinky of a 65-year-old man who opposed health care reform

The man in the orange shirt hit the pro-reform guy (Im going to call him PR Guy just to keep the players straight). Hard. ( tweeted in real time) He punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground and into that thruway. As you can see from the photo, cars drive straight through that without stopping. The pro-reform guy could have been run over. He got up, tried to get back up on the curb, but Orange Shirt guy was in his face. Finger in his face, PR Guy standing, steps up to the curb, and theres a scuffle. Orange shirt seemed to have PR Guy in a hold, but again, I was across the street, so wont state that as absolute fact. Next thing I see is PR Guys hat being tossed into the street, both yelling at one another, then Orange shirt walks away, PR Guy picks up hat and crosses to our side.

When he gets to our side, he tells a story in one sentence: He punched me hard, straight in the face, so I bit his finger off.
and now he had to walk to the hospital for health care, funny
thing is, he might not have health insurance, see how ignorant these people are(?)

34. There is another witness, the "finger-bearer"
I think both are telling the truth, just different perspective...

http://www.redcounty.com/man-moveonorg-healthcare-vigil...

recap......

About 20 minutes earlier, a man on MoveOn.org’s side of the street crossed over and shouted “Why don’t you like the public option?” Several of the counter-protesters said that they don’t want the government to run everything. The MoveOn.org man got nose to nose with a short, gray-haired counter-protester, and sneered, “You’re an idiot.”

At that point, I’m told the victim either swung at or pushed his assailant’s face away with an open hand, and his finger entered his mouth.

“It was a defensive strike,” said Scott Bush, who witnessed the altercation. He said the assailant approached him in an unpredictable and threatening manner.

The MoveOn.org protester then allegedly bit off the finger up to the first knuckle, and spat it into the street where it was recovered by Bush.

“I picked it up and it had a piece of gravel stuck on it,” he said. Bush rushed it to the hospital.

The attacker started back to the other side of the street, but then returned to briefly argue some more or attempt to justify what he had done before “swaggering off”, in the words of one witness. Deputies obtained a description of the suspect and searched the area but returned empty-handed.

endcap----

Doesn't look good for the biter(if the police trace back the DNA) since the only CLOSE witnesses are were on the side of the bitten. The moveon folks were about 25-50 yards away.

ALWAYS bring someone with you. At least to see what actually happens.

38. Quite true, however
Only one of these silly gentlemen will be charged with mayhem.

A felony.

This is bad news all around.

One of the goals of these teabaggers is to PROVOKE stupidity on our side. The debate then becomes something about weho is the aggressor(who has the power/abuse) and NOT about healthcare

Unfortunately they succeed too often.
