It could be that he was too frail to attend the big public service where many many people would likely greet him. I would guess that that could expose him to germs his body simply could not handle. (This might be working too hard to put a positive face on it - and I have absolutely no medical expertise.)

My dad died from brain cancer a few years ago. He was about Sen. Kennedy's age, and from what I've been able to learn, their illnesses took similar paths. It's tough to watch.
