Mr. Bloomberg, who has met with President Bush privately on several occasions while in office, has made a point of not appearing publicly with the president, who is not terribly popular in New York City, and has almost never been photographed with him.

It is worth noting that Mr. Bloomberg is not camera-shy - when people ask if he would mind having a a photo taken with them, he usually replies, "The only time I mind is when people don't want a picture with me," then mugs happily for a quick snap.

Bloomberg did not go the fund-raiser on Monday and kept his distance at the RNC convention
