Obama picks Anne Northup for Consumer Product Safety Commission

WASHINGTON — Former Republican Rep. Anne Northup looks to be out of the political wilderness, courtesy of President Barack Obama.

The ex-congresswoman from Louisville, who has been out of the limelight since her 2006 defeat for re-election after 10 years in the U.S. House, is to be nominated as a commissioner on the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, the White House announced Thursday evening.

Northup was not an Obama partisan in last year's election, so that is not why the president tapped her. Rather, her nomination was recommended to the president by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Under the structure of the five-member commission, the Senate GOP leader has a say in the selection of a Republican commissioner. The post is subject to Senate confirmation.

“I am really pleased and hoping that the confirmation process goes well,” Northup said when reached on her cell phone. She was in Washington, where she said she has kept the residence she used when shuttled between Louisville and the nation's capital while in Congress.

McConnell has been a political mentor to Northup and was instrumental in furthering her career in Congress.

I don't think anyone has properly established her citizenship, and therefor her eligibility for appointed political office. Unless, of course, we're just handing these jobs out to any illegal immigrant who wants one...
