Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 12:31 PM by DevonRex
taxes. She says she's all about states' rights now. And that she doesn't really want a civil war because people would die. The way she went on and on about it made it obvious that she would be fine with it if there were a civil war. She's really happy about the states that have passed sovereignty resolutions. She wonders if South Carolina will be the first to secede this time, too. And she said that of course she's worried that health care reform will mean putting our seniors to death.

She's so far gone that obviously there's nothing I can say to change her mind - what little there is left of it. I may have to tell her that I don't want to hear this stuff anymore. She knows full well that I'm a liberal democrat but she keeps pushing these discussions quite deliberately. If I tell her to knock it off she might not speak to me again.

What would you do?

1. You might one time ask her how much revenue SC brings in from the Fed
and if they would like to give that up.

The reply won't be coherent but at least I will have tried.

the tax issue.

And you might suggest that she familiarize herself with the devastation caused by the Civil War. I wouldn't think that anyone would want to try something like that again.

13. I have tried so hard to keep the peace but at some point there's
no use if the other person refuses to do the same thing. I have stood up to her for her hatred of gays but mostly I've let the other stuff slide. I think the talk of civil war might just be my breaking point.

37. What's awful in addition to her ideas, is that she used to be a warm
loving person. Ever since Bush was selected she has been a nut. It's just horrible to find out that a person who you've always loved has turned into a hateful crazy bigot.

7. States' Rights, eh? So she'll be happy when all of the states endorse gay marriage, then?
And legalize pot? It's the feds that are raining on those parades, now, isn't it?

After all, she's FOR states' rights, now, isn't she?

Throw that at her, and watch her head explode. Then shake your head sadly, and simply walk away from political discussions with her.

She's an idiot, but she's your sister. You only have one family. Try to avoid political talk in the future.

I'm sure Organizing for America will have a couple of functions that would be kid-friendly. :D

I kid. The best thing to do is just pointedly change the subject every time she brings up politics, like to family or how her day went or reminiscing about being kids together. You know, stuff that shows you still care about her.

She simply would not stop w/ the o'lielly, limpballs, hammity, blasted email garbage. I finally had to block her cuz she would not stop. Things have been a bit tense. When I was there for my dad's memorial service, she started ranting about AL GORE!!!! Al Gore, as if he had some power to do anything. She hates Pelosi after believing the email that Pelosi was going to take away her pension fund.

19. Just bring up federal programs and ask if she wishes to give them up.
Like social security, roads, bridges, schools, medicare, fire fighting departments, police services, unemployment benefits, and so on...

This is the single irrefutable argument for federally funded programs: citing federal programs that benefit us all, paid for by our federal income tax dollars.

23. Well if states secede then they will no longer receive any federal funding
they would be solely on their own. So if civil war was going to happen, it would because of a state that seceded.

25. If you secede from the union you will no longer get Federal
Constitutional protect.

When you LEAVE the union, you are thereby removing yourself from receiving any federal assistance. The said seceded state will have its own constitution and be solely responsible for its citizens.

26. Many of us have lost relatives over this election. I suppose that's the "civil" war:
we are being civil.
They are not.

I received such hateful emails from my brother that I sent one line and never opened another email.
The line:

You have ceased to be anyone I would want to know or be related to.

And somehow he got to my mother and changed the whole situation so that she thought I sent the uncivilized emails.
She is 83 and sits in her house and watches Fox News all day. Every time I come for a visit, she tries to explain how they are "fair and balanced."
She became angry at me for telling her that my brother sent the emails. She does not believe me, and she basically kicked me out of the family with one of those "you're out of the will" lines.

I've had to think long and hard about this and I've come to the conclusion that sometimes your soul is worth more than being related to someone.

I am very much at peace. All the dissonance has left the building. Thank goodness.

38. That is EXACTLY it. I feel like I'm losing a bit of my soul every time
I let her ramble on like that. At first I thought it was better to keep the peace, especially since I'm the only democrat in the family. If I opened my mouth to give an opposing view I'd have 20 people shouting me down. So I just never discussed politics with them.

But now it's gotten to the point that the ideas being tossed around are just plain evil and I can't ignore it any longer. The really awful stuff started with her hatred of gays. I didn't let that go without telling her what I thought. I couldn't have lived with myself if I had.

But now it's obvious that it's not just the religious nuts she listens to, but the political nuts too. I mean secession? :eyes:

34. Funny how in the case of gay marriage, they want a federal amendment banning it.
The hypocrisy is mind numbing.

The saddest part for me is knowing that members of my own family are basically mean spirited, even evil, bigots. Not wanting to take care of the poor and sick is evil, IMO, as is not wanting people to marry for some stupid reason.

28. Why are the nuttiest states the ones that need the most help?
The idiots fail to realize that they'd wither on the vine without the military bases and the hefty amount of buckage siphoned off from the people they spew off about.

Except for barely Texas all the Red States are on the receiving end, if they got their ways they'd live in a wasteland.

I feel for the OP though. All of us that have a Rush listening sibling, parent, or loved one are cut off from our families either by having to pretend much or even most of what is important to us away to deal with them or there has been a split that actually cuts off communication. I'm optimistic that mine will retire soon thereby get out of the police culture and slowly return to rational.

Who is going to come to their rescue if they get taken over by Mexico's Army? Is she willing to shoot people in the streets. Is she willing to fight for her property, food, and gas? And all these stupid middle to lower income people protesting taxes for the rich is just laughable. I have a brother who is rich and does complain, but these assholes protesting for their bosses, and millionaires is funny. My brother isn't going to protest, he just complains to me. He watches Faux Noise everyday. And he's a birther too. He's counting the days LOL!

Obviously it is unhealthy for you and certainly isn't serving her. Perhaps she needs and maybe even expects you to finally put your foot down and say "enough". There is no way of knowing where that would lead, but you may have to do it for your own sanity.

Taxes pay to make our water clean.

Then ask the dumbfuck asshat if she supports the fire department, the police department, good roads... yep, those evil taxes.

As for the teabag moolyaks, nearly all of them are on Social Security or Medicare. Goverment run stuff that taxes pay for.

If she is a fucking freeloader who wants us to pay for her shit, she should admit it. At least then she would be being honest.
