1. The talking heads are spouting that the market is making nice gains on good news
and not falling on bad news.

The trigger today was word at 2 PM that "the worst is over" from Roubini, the economist known as
"Dr. Doom"

6. Holy Shit!
*Roubini* said the worst is over? That is quite a turnaround from him.

15. Perhaps he meant that the worst is over...
...for America's ruling class, and that our overlords will soon be able to resume stealing from us.

2. Wow!
Are foreclosures down?

Is GM selling more cars? Chrysler?

Was there a big drop in unemployment?

Did consumers pay down a lot of debt?

Has California found a hidden stash of money?

Did President Obama and Congress suddenly balance the federal budget?

Mmmmm.

The Dow is about gamblers and speculators ... it has little to do with the health of the economy.

3. Sure. So investers are gambling and speculating about the economy...
but what happens in the market has little to do with the economy. Gotcha.

12. I increased my investment in the stock market when it was at its low point
and I've been doing so ever since.

not because I'm a gambler or speculator but because I honestly thought a lot of good companies were undervalued, like Ford at $2 :wtf:

17. New filingds for UI are down. Consumer debt is down, savings and spending up
This is the start of recovery. Earnings have to increase substantially before hiring begins in any meaningful way.

Investors are neither gamblers nor speculatos and I for one am very relieved that my Social Choice CREF funds are finally regaining some of their early losses. Gains in the DOW mean increased security for retirees like my husband and me.

4. And it is a because the market loves Sotomayor AND a health care package.
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 03:57 PM by TexasObserver
Hey, if the losers at CNBC and Fox Business News can claim every downtick means the market doesn't like something Obama said ....

7. But I read on DU that the economy is going to get far worse
and that we're all doomed.

This is very confusing!

9. not precisely. but when the dow was soaring, was the economy worse or better than now?
Can you point to an extended period of time in which the economy was tanking and the dow was doing great, or when the economy was doing great and the dow was tanking...

16. Good God, no.
The Dow is a measure of how rapidly the rich are able to steal from us.

13. Asswipes play the market on volatilty not level
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 08:07 PM by PufPuf23
High volatility means profit (I typed peofit taking, which may be a good new word for taking from common people, hence the edit) taking and bleeding capital from the market whether the movements are up or down, magnitude per unit time allows a systematic lower risk (and on average greater return -- a form of arbitrage) for those playing market volatilty rather than market value. This is our system exported to the World.
