Obama Job Approval Drifts Down to 58% So Far in July per Gallup
RINCETON, NJ -- U.S. President Barack Obama averaged a 58% job approval rating for the first eight days of July, down from an average of 61% for June. His approval rating is down most significantly among independents, to 53% so far in July from an average of 59% in June; it has dropped two points among Republicans (from 25% in June to 23% so far in July) and has gone up a point among Democrats, to 90%.

Democrats have remained stalwart in their support for Obama all year, with this month's average rating of 90% roughly in line with where it has been all year.

Among Republicans, Obama's standing has dropped from 40% in late January to 23% in early July, the biggest falloff among the three partisan groups across the first six months of the Obama administration. Independents' overall downward shift across the January to early July time period has been nine points, significantly less than the drop among Republicans, although, as noted, independents have dropped most in the July-to-June comparison.

In addition to monthly averages, Gallup reports Obama's job approval rating at Gallup.com each day, based on three-day rolling averages. Obama reached a new administration low of 56% for July 5-7; his approval average is one point higher at 57% for the latest three-day period, July 6-8.

So the Dems are holding steady...I think this proves any loss of support is coming from easily manipulated independents who think Faux news is okay to listen to, not from any liberal dems. I think the economy not getting any better has something to do with it even though most here get that it will take a long time to get out of the hole.

1. Independents are a crucial swing vote in many areas/states
Independent support of Obama has dropped 10 points from 63 to 53 since May. I think that's cause for serious concern.

I like how you think the loss of support is from Independents "easily manipulated who think Fox News is okay to listen to, not from any liberal dems." Where do you get all that? Easily manipulated? I think they are most likely the ones who resist manipulation the most since they prefer being lone wolves or issues voters who are frequently disappointed with BOTH parties as they merge into a mid-point mush.

How many Idependents who listen to Fox News do you think voted for Obama? I maintain that the drop IS coming from the liberal side, it stands to reason that those types would have the greatest reasons for disappointment at this point.

2. Its not, because these same independents list the deficit and govt. spending as their main concern
Does not sound like they read Krugman.
And did you watch the focus groups during the election after a debate...the undecideds/indies were impossible. They could not make up their minds on anything. I think they are the least informed of all groups.

3. I agree that the undecided/indies were beyond frustrating since there
literally couldn't be a clearer choice in the entire world.

Where are you seeing the Independents listing deficits & government spending as their main concern? - I clicked around , but could not find the specific breakdown. I agree with you that those 2 issues ARE pushed by Fox, Hannity, Limbaugh, et al, but I guess I just have a hard time accepting that many of that ilk voted for Obama in the first place. Maybe more than I have been giving credence to - I actually knew quite a few people who would have normally been McCain voters who just couldn't do it due to his age and their concerns about Palin.

4. This Drop Was Expected
The economy was not going to turn around in 6 months, and Independents are cool to the idea of government social programs, esp. on healthcare.

This is the reason why the Dems need to include the Public Option. Independents need to be shown with direct evidence and proof that govt programs can work and better their lives. Without a public health option, Independents won't see a material difference in their lives, and they will go from cool to ice cold.
