6. Every Senator and Congressman Should Have To Spend 2 to 3 Hours In An ER.......
before they can vote on any health care reform bill. They need to see what many Americans have to go through to get health care. They should also have to see the bills afterwards and deal with insurance companies. Maybe then we'd get real reform.

Babies and young children normally run very high temps when they are sick. 104 or even 105 is not uncommon. Let's hope it's just a cold or bug and that your child gets well soon.

15. I shouldn't suggest anything about small children because I have never
had one, but a lot of mothers I know say to immerse them in ice water to reduce the temperature. They hate it but it helps them to survive. I have had to do the same with some of my cats in the past.

20. Not a good idea.
Edited on Thu Jun-25-09 11:54 PM by dgibby
Immersing them in ice water causes shivering, which is the body's response to cold, designed by nature to RAISE the body temperature. Tepid water is best. No alcohol sponges either, as the baby will absorb the alcohol through the skin.

Fever can be a good thing, in that there are many bacteria that cannot live at high temps. Fever is the body's natural response to fight off these foreign "invaders"; however, a high fever can be dangerous, and should be evaluated by a Dr.

Most fevers in this age group are a result of teething or ear infections, but it's impossible to know without a complete work up.

Taking the baby to the ER was absolutely the right move. Hope this helps, and hope the tylenol kicks in soon and that baby feels better.

34. Good to hear that she isn' t sick.
That probably narrows it down to teething or ear infection. Has he been tugging at his ears? BTW, don't give them a bottle when your put them down for a nap or at night, as the milk can back up in the eustation tubes, causing ear infections. Wish my mother had known that! Ouch! I didn't learn it until nursing school.

21. So Sorry
It is always difficult when little ones get sick. I've been in your footsteps before. Fevers can be the result of teething, the second immunization, and other things. Hopefully you can give the baby some fluids as they can get dehydrated. I'm glad that you are checking it out. Don't let anyone give you a bad time in the ER. Post again when you can so we can hear how you and the baby are doing.

25. He'll be okay ...

About a year after my daughter was born, we found ourselves in the hospital one night with the very same situation. Her fever was 105, and she started having seizures.

It just so happened this was also the night we started bombing Iraq the first time.

It was not a fun night at all, but she's now entering her junior year of college and is doing well. She never had another episode like that, thankfully.

31. metamorphosis
I've come to believe that there are three states of humans ... kids, adults and parents.

Kids are sure they are immortal; adults think that they might be mortal;
and parents will gladly prove that you are mortal if you threaten their kids.

Hope the fever doesn't turn out to be anything serious, and sorry we have such a
obscene health care system.

48. From a Mom whose child had strep throat for the first time
Edited on Fri Jun-26-09 11:41 AM by mtnester
when he was about 8 months old, fevers can come on fast, and they can get high quick.

I learned early on how to bring down a very very high fever using the bathtub trickle method to cool his body down. I swear by it. Getting the fever down is primary, down to soemthing more realsitic and easier on his body. Tylenol/your choice of fever reducer takes a bit, this works pretty fast, so give fever reducer first.

Did they do a throat culture to rule out strep? A simply sore thoat usually does not do this (fever), unless it is active tonsilitis, strep or sore as a result from an ancillary ear infection. (there are other things, but they are not as common at all, inclduing meningitis)

Keep track of either and keep your pediatrician informed...I had a pediatrician who was not up to date, and just kept giving medicine over and over for his chronic strep. We finally switched and eventually, after appropriate documentation, had his tonsils out. They were so bad the surgeon wondered how a good sneeze did not bring them out. Once those harbors of strep were gone, he has been strep free ever since (16 years this August)

I hope everything is figured out and all are doing better today!

44. Future reference for high fever...(m)
You can alternate motrin and tylenol to keep a fever down. In my experience, tylenol brings it down faster, but motrin tends to keep it down longer.

A high fever in a child that age is not too much of a concern, until it gets around 105-106. Once they're older (say 4yo+), any fever sustained over 104 is reason to call. However, if you have any more kids, any fever at all in a little one less than 3 months is reason to call.

To reduce a fever externally, place cool cloths: behind the neck, under the arms and in the groin.

If the child is throwing up and can't keep down oral meds, use Feverall - which is a suppository version of acetometaphin (sp?).

Hugs and hang in there. When my 13yo was 14 months old, she had a febrile seizure (which, by the way, are not caused by high fever per se, but rather by how fast the temperature rises. Her temp went from normal to ~106 in less than two hours.)

57. Here's the best pediatric advice on fever out there
by Dr Barton Schmitt, the "king" of pediatric advice handouts for parents and pediatric telephone protocols:

Fever: http://www.thechildrenshospital.org/wellness/at_home/fever/fever.aspx

***Fever - Myths Versus Facts: http://www.thechildrenshospital.org/wellness/at_home/fever/fever_myths.aspx

Page w/ links to lots of pages of Dr. Schmitt's advice on tons of pediatric health issues (he's also got great behavioral advice out there too, but not on this page. Also wrote a great piece on avoiding the spoiled child): http://www.thechildrenshospital.org/wellness/at_home/index.aspx#fever

This includes all the "Pediatric Advisor" topics, even the behavioral ones - most are written by Schmitt, some by his colleagues at Children's Hospital in Denver: https://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/pa/pa_index.htm

Also, I highly, HIGHLY recommend his book "Your Child's Health" - should come with every baby as an "Owner's Manual": http://www.amazon.com/Your-Childs-Health-Emergencies-Development/dp/0553383698

I used to buy this book as a gift for everyone I knew with a new baby, and for friends w/ older kids as well. Some pediatricians give a copy to all the families in their practice. Yes, it's that good. (I haven't seen this most recent edition, but the earlier ones were absolutely primo)

(for a year or so from now, his advice on toilet training is the best out there - I've posted about it multiple times here on DU: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=7831452&mesg_id=7831738 )
