Did Obama just mention the overthrow of Iran's Mossadeq in 1953?
I'm just watching president Obama's speech in Cairo on YouTube, and I am shocked...

Shocked, because of the honesty and sincerity with which he speaks. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better after he acknowledged the day-to-day suffering of the Palestinian people, I just heard Mr. Obama say: "In the middle of the Cold War, the United States played a role in the overthrow of a democratically elected Iranian government."

To my knowledge, this is a first. Finally, an American president who does not pander to his people about the role the U.S. has played in the Middle East. Finally, an American president who doesn't tell his people "they hate us for our freedoms". Finally, an American president who is not afraid to tell the truth. Thank you, Mr. Obama.

From Holland with love,

27. No US President has been able to admit it publicly.
It sets in motion all kinds of things that nobody wants to bother with.

See, that's why Obama's first "gotcha" question from Helen Thomas was about whether he knew of any middle eastern nations that possessed nuclear weapons. Of course the honest answer would be "Israel."

16. Yes, it was Dallas in 1963. Poppy, Babs and Jeb were crack shots.
Dubya was a cheerleader and liked to play "dress-up."

2. Yes he did. I have never heard another American politician,
let alone President, acknowledge that. In fact, most American people don't know about it or believe it. It's as if our relationship with Iran began in 1979 with the hostage incident.

My jaw dropped this morning when he said that.

5. Raw story had a link to a report. Obama "made history" with the acknowledgement
No sitting president has ever publicly acknowledged that we took part in the 53 coup.

Of course, he didn't go into the details and spoke in "political speak"--but it was an admission nonetheless.

Lots of interesting things today....

8. Thanks, I'm going to check out Raw Story. It was a stunning
acknowledgment - of course, NOT A WORD about it on MSM.

And you're right, it was a first step.

4. Yep, it's an awesome speech
He even stands up for women's rights. I am sorry he didn't stand up for gay rights too, but maybe by the end of his term they will have moved far enough that he can start addressing that. By then we will have repealed DADT and DOMA, and he will be on much better footing.

14. I would've never dreamed I would hear an American president give this kind of speech...
Now let's just hope it doesn't end with words alone.

I'm skeptical by nature, but from what I've seen and heard, I'm willing to be hopeful. Granted, Obama is not a radical progressive like me, but this speech was very, very encouraging. It was beautiful.

15. You're most welcome. Nothing about this mentioned in your MSM, I take it?
Sadly, Obama's speech was kind of pushed aside in the Dutch media by the Dutch elections for the European Union's Parliament. And I'm sad to say that Obama's ending notes on reconciliation between people of all faiths hasn't resonated in The Netherlands, where a crude anti-Islam party has won the elections. :(

18. It was early (like 5:30 - 6am) Eastern time when he gave it.
MSNBC broadcast the whole thing, and then spent some time covering it.

I'm not sure if it was repeated in it's entirety again later in the day. What a wonderful speech.

19. I'm sorry to hear about
the crude anti-Islam partys' win, it seems like life is almost always two steps forward and one step back; if you're lucky. I hope things work out peacefully for Holland, good luck.

I haven't watched the corporations' media yet.

Peace to you, DutchLiberal.:hi:

22. Thank you, you're most kind.
I must say I'm not a religious person myself, at all, but I was moved when Obama quoted from the Qu'ran, the Talmud and the Bible all different verses which essentially all had the same peaceful message.

I wonder how many freeper's heads exploded when Mr. Obama said "Salaam Aleikum" and quoted the Qu'ran three times.
