The Obama Girls, Too, Will See Paris
By Rachel L. Swarns

Malia and Sasha Obama will fly with the first lady to France on Friday to join President Obama for a family weekend in Paris, a White House official said on Wednesday. It will be the girls’ first foreign trip since they moved into the White House in January.

Mr. Obama is scheduled to return to Washington on Sunday, but First Lady Michelle Obama and Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, plan to stay on in Paris for a few days next week.

Aides to the Obamas have said that the couple is looking forward to exposing their daughters to different parts of the city, the country and the world. Malia and Sasha also traveled with their parents to Kenya in 2006 when Mr. Obama was a U.S. senator.

Mrs. Obama will have one public event in Normandy, France on Saturday, but the rest of the family trip will be private, the official said. There will be no official announcements outlining their sightseeing plans.

thinking it was so wonderful that W liked to vacation in the USA. The man was an incurious dolt who couldn't find Europe on a map if it was the only continent up there. Aaarggghhhh. Anyway, I'm glad that Michelle and the President are making sure that Sasha and Malia travel and experience other countries, cultures, ways of looking at things, histories and people from an early age. My parents made sure that we traveled as much as the family budget would allow and it's a great (and humbling) learning experience.

I was always amazed at the fact that W. never took advantage of all of the many opportunities provided by his family to travel anywhere beyond Tijuana before becoming president.

Fortunately, it looks like the Malia and Sasha will have a very different take on the world as they grow older. What great parents they have!
