WTF-what is your point Leahy??
Leahy: Sotomayor hearings will be on his schedule

May 31, 10:40 AM (ET)

WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Democrat overseeing President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee says he will set his own schedule for Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings.

Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont said Sunday that he will meet his own schedule, not necessarily the White House's timeline, to confirm her before an August recess.

The White House says Obama wants Sotomayor to be confirmed before the August recess. Officials want Sotomayor to be in place when the court's next term begins in October.

The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Leahy says Sotomayor should be in place before the term starts, but he isn't committing to Obama's plan to have her confirmed before the recess.

Leahy spoke to NBC's "Meet the Press."

What is this guy trying to prove? The president deserves speediness on his nominations and is most definitely entitled to all due speed in this matter. After all, he did win the biggest majority in the PV for a (D) in 40 years.

Leahy needs to learn manners and might want to re-state this.

2. Durng the intervew he said Obama would probably like confirmation in June
He didn't appear contrary to me. But I didn't catch this quote about being ready by October. That sounds dopey.

Hopefully he was just trying to show a little independence but plans to hustle things along at a good clip. There's no need to get all theatrical about this. I've read that historically confirmations could happened with lightening speed.

3. The Senate is an equal branch of government...
The President, whomever it is, has to wait for the EQUAL branch of government to perform its Advise and Consent role.

Besides, I saw Meet the Press this morning and that AP wire article make way too much out of the comment. Basically Sen Sessions was asked if the nominee could be confirmed by the recess. Sessions was the one who tried to make some excuses. Leahy shot back that because the Republican Leaders such as Rush and Newt were calling Sotomayor a racist and other despicable allegations, he was inclined to have hearing much sooner so she could defend herself. When David Gregory press the issue of how quickly it could happen, Leahy was making the point that as Chairmen, he set the timetable, not Sessions. It was much more a shot at the Repukes than at Obama.

6. No, he's trying to stretch it out
Roberts was confirmed in two months. Alito in three months. There's more than enough time to get her confirmed before the recess.

10. Truth Commision
It's not the best thing that could happen, but it's a lot better then nothing. Nothing, however, is probably what we will get.

12. I don't get your complaint. The Judiciary Committee has its own job to do, and
is entitled to have its own timetable to do it in. It does not answer to the executive branch.

I thought we just went through 8 years of seeing how damaging it is for the White House to control the Congress.

Psssst....BTW, Leahy just gave the standard answer to a timetable question. He said he'd try, but wouldn't guarantee. The only answer a reasonable committee member COULD give. Even if he feels that he can slam dunk deliver Sotomayor before October, he can't say that. And of course, he doesn't have the power to guarantee that, anyway.

He gave a good answer. He will try to meet the White House's timetable, and he thinks it will happen, but he can't guarantee it.
