Does Notre Dame/the Catholic church consider IVF clinics an "intrinsic evil"?
Edited on Sun May-17-09 06:04 PM by jenmito
Afterall, IVF clinics "kill thousands of babies" every year by discarding left-over frozen blastocysts or "embryos" as they call them. And those are the ones Obama is allowing to be used for ESCR. It's not like he's "killing babies" that aren't being "killed" anyway. He's only allowing research to be done on those that will be discarded from the IVF clinics. So what's their position on these clinics? I never hear that they're against them.

1. While science and faith are supposedly "separate magesteria . . ."
According to the late Stephen Gould, in actual fact where one overlaps the other, faith comes off second-best. Toing-and-froing and dancing with the angels on the head of a pin are required theological exercises. Some religions, being more dictatorial than others (use list of your choice), have more trouble with this overlap than others.

2. To answer your question
---which I had to look up because I didn't know, and I was also wondering---the Catholic Church opposes IVF. That's the short answer.

4. Thanks...
at least they're consistent. But I've never seen protests outside of IVF clinics.

3. It opposes IVF as unnatural fertilization.
It opposes discarding fertilized zygotes as they are considered human upon conception, by whatever means.

It opposes ESCR because it encourages unnatural fertilization for the purpose of using, hence destroying, them for research.

AFIK, it says nothing about the clinics themselves, only what goes on inside them.
