How long is this darn commencement?!
I'm serious. I never went to my graduation and now that I'm back in school and graduating in my MA in another school---I've been forced to attend. I'm not liking this one bit. I hope my school so doesn't take this long for a commencement; if so I will leave early.

Much like Prom, I see nothing exciting about Graduation. I just want to see and hear what our Pres has to say but sitting through the Notre Dame version---is kicking my arse. And I fear if I leave, I won't be able to get it up again.

~sigh~ Anyone have the CNN, C-Span, or whatever link... :(

5. I hate them, too. But, their appeal has this set of priorities:
Edited on Sun May-17-09 01:01 PM by Buzz Clik
1. Immediate family of the graduates.
2. Students who like ceremonies.
3. Students who want some sort of celebration/closure on their academic career.
4. Faculty who like the pageantry.

So, if your family isn't planning on attending, I'd suggest you tell your school to simply mail your diploma to you.

9. My mum and sister like all the huffle and bustle.
And unfortunately for me, not looking ahead, my sister is graduating from the same school as me; this year. So I'm stuck.

2. attending graduation is not "required." You can still get your degree without attending. (nt)

4. I know. I'm doing it for my mum. When I got my BA I didn't go.
My mum was really upset. So I said if I'm getting my MA I should go...and anyway my sis is graduating from the same school and wants to attend. She has done it all. From Prom to graduation----I'm not a fan of all the ceremonial crap---but feel compelled to go.

8. Suck it up and do it for your mom. It's only 2 or 3 hours. Pretend it's a really bad movie.

12. Interesting concept -- she owes you.
Maybe you could convince her to put on the cap and gown and take your place in the ceremony. You could watch it on streaming video from the comfort of your own home ... or not.

7. I've attended commencements for tiny schools and enormous schools.
Edited on Sun May-17-09 01:05 PM by Buzz Clik
The tiny schools have more speeches and announce every graduate's name.

Larger schools have a tad fewer speeches and announce names of only the PhDs and sometimes MS degrees.

The huge schools split their graduations into chunks allowing them to still have lots of speeches, announce lots of names.

They all take 2 to 3 hours.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

13. Mine was in 1999. It must have been long but I barely remember it.
Edited on Sun May-17-09 01:14 PM by Jennicut
All I remember is it WAS boring but I was also so happy to be done and get my psych degree. Somehow my boyfriend (who is now my husband) and I passed the time and made it through without falling asleep. It was Central Connecticut State U.

14. Always bring a book to graduations
They are impossibly long.

Also, if you are hungover froom the night before...have a few more drinks and get drunk again.

Graduations suck.
