3. What is a sexual preference? Lights on or off? On friday nights only?
I believe you're talking about Lt. Choi's sexual orientation, sir.

9. Sexual preference means....
...that, for example, I dig guys with blue eyes...or maybe someone else really has a turn on about blonds, etc.

Sexual orientation is about how someone is BORN...and that is a continuum from totally straight to totally gay and all places and points in between! It just is what it is and there is no choice or preference involved in that situation.

I totally agree with you! It is an insult to the gay community...and therefore and insult to EVERYONE...to speak of choices or preferences.

One of my bestest pals, a gay man, years ago put it all into perspective with one question he posed to me: "When did you decide to be straight?"

That was a real clear picture to me then and it still is now ~~ I never made any decision (i.e., chose a preference) to be be a straight person. I just am a straight person. The same goes for gay people ~~ they just happen to be gay.

People are born a certain way and the bullshit about choice, preference and all that other crap needs to be put to rest! Until then, I do believe that we are going to have a hell of a time getting equal rights for those who others feel are making a "choice" about an issue.

:hi:

11. Why did Lt. Dan out himself on national TV, knowing he would be fired
since Congress has not repealed DADT? It's a bad law, but until it's repealed it stands. I guess he wanted to make a point, and he has.

12. Lt. Daniel Choi is a hero in my eyes
he is practicing the fine art of civil disobedience. He is doing much more than making a point. He knows the time is ripe for change and he is willing to act in the most effective way possible... A thousand thanks to Choi and he deserves our support in any way we can give it.

14. Really? You don't understand why he did that?
Amazing. Why did people march for civil rights knowing police dogs would be set on them?

Why did the guy stand in front of the tank in Tienanmen Square?

and on and on.

18. no, he wasnt a hero for the civil rights cause. he was a hero in the way most people in the military
are. that is to say, people regardless of sexual orientation who work and put themselves at risk for their nation are somewhat more heroic than the rest of us. people who put their jobs and lives ahead of their own careers are heroes for their causes.

19. So, Rosa Parks should have waited....
until they repealed the discriminatory busing laws in Alabama instead of taking her seat at the front of the bus?

Got it!

Clearly you don't get it....

13. K&R !! Kudos to KnightsOut for their bravery in challenging DADT.
Our country needs officers like Lt. Dan Choi, who is an Arab linguist, in addition to his other credentials.

It is good to see distinguished officers and West Point grads coming forward in protest against the ridiculous policy of Don't Ask Don't Tell.

There are already policies against sexual harassment in the military, so whatever their sexual orientation, all soldiers should be maintaining that discipline.

20. Thanks for the links. I just joined the FB group.
Dan Choi is a hero. I hope the publicity puts pressure in the right places and corrects this travesty, as well as eventually the millions of other travesties related to inequality that we never hear about.

25. More power to him, but I don't hold much faith that President Obama will
help him. President Obama has done great on other issues, but he has yet to keep ANY campaign promises with regards to gay rights.

29. the very first post was about how the LT should have kept his sexual preference to himself
and that he likely wanted discharged anyway. All of the delete posts were that post, his defense of that post, or responses to that post.

32. Well, the law is the law, right? No one is above the law, right?
The Lt. knew, when he spoke on national TV, that he would be discharged, since that is the law, right?

Don't get me wrong: I think the law is a bad one. But it is the law.

If someone says that torture is against the law, and no one is above the law, then it follows that if someone breaks the DADT law, then that person is not above the law. We don't get to pick and choose the laws that we think should, or should not be, obeyed, and those who are above it, and those who are not.

Or...maybe civil disobedience is what you're talking about? Fine. Then Cheney can be civilly disobedient, too? Right? OTOH, the torture laws directly affect others' physical being, where DADT doesn't physically affect others (just mentally...so those in favor of DADT say).

Or...can Obama change the law retroactively? I don't think he can change that law at all, much less retroactively.

It was an obvious activist action by the LT. to bring light to the issue. Kudos to him. It worked. But he of course has to be discharged, since that is the law.
