RNC Chair Steele Statement on Specter Switch

Statement from Chairman Steele on Senator Arlen Specter's Decision to Switch to the Democratic Party.

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

“Some in the Republican Party are happy about this. I am not.

Let's be honest-Senator Specter didn't leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record.

Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don't do it first.”

Left wing voting record? LOL, we wish. Well, if anything, I guess it will be fun watching the Repubs lash out over this.

4. He was a Democrat before he was a Republican...
I think it's conceivable that a person can just get fed up and decide that better work can be done by changing parties.

Now, it could also be true that he did this to keep his senate seat.

The two theories are not mutually exclusive.

:hi:

29. Is that like saying he was for us before he was against us? :)
Eh.. who cares, today it's all happy news... we'll worry about the details in '10. Or, actually - those who reside in PA will.. i'm in NE. I have to deal with Nelson.

5. That statement doesn't even make sense. If he feels Specter didn't leave based on principles
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 12:16 PM by jenmito
and looks forward to beating him, he should've said they didn't want him ANYWAY since he's not sincere, he's "left-wing," etc.

8. Michael Steele - the gift that keeps on giving to the Democratic Party
This is your fuckup Steele. You KNEW that there was no way that Pat Toomey could win in Pennsylvania in a general election and yet you stupidily pushed to have Toomey run again. Toomey would have beaten Specter this time but not have enough support ESPECIALLY in the Philly area (Specter's home town and the focal point of all PA statewide elections except Republican primaries).

Specter was smart to move now. If he pulled a "Lieberman" (running independant after losing the primaries) he probably would not have had the votes needed to win the election and could very well give the win to Toomey.

Somebody please translate that into sentient thought for me.

13. I'm having an issue with his first statement and then the rest.
"Some will be happy, I am not."

And then he goes and gives every reason to be happy.

Oh well we didn't want him anyway! He was a left-winger (really?).

Yeesh.

20. Yep...classic Steele.
I first thought he was going to say he wasn't happy because the party was losing a moderate.

Then the rest of his statement makes no sense.

15. The more Steele attacks the worse he looks.
While on his watch, the puke party is becoming more extremist and radical, and the few moderates left are jumping ship.

16. Ummm... Steele?
If he has a "left wing voting record" isn't that rather conclusive evidence he DID leave for reasons of principle?

"He didn't leave because he agreed with the Democrats! He just left because he was going to lose the primary... for agreeing with the Democrats too much!"

What a jackass. He couldn't get through a two sentence statement without shooting down his own argument.

24. Given the choice between classy and snarky, Steele chooses snarky.
So Specter's many years of service to the Republican Party apparently count for nada to Steele, all he is concerned about is rationalization. Really classy, Michael.

28. anyone watching Steele on CNN?
Uh....yeah, he is definitely freaked out. He is saying of Specter "His Momma didn't raise him that way" (!) and "You can tweak my nose, step on my toes only so much before enough is enough! ANd I think that's what a lot of Republicans thought of Specter voting with Democrats!" And he says that if Specter survives the Democratic primary (even though I thought unfortunately, we weren't getting one) "Get read to go to the Mat, baby, because we're taking him out!"

And Borger is asking about the Stimulus/pandemic flu funds, Steele said "Well, did we know what would happen at the time? We were told this was about creating jobs!" (as if no jobs could be created from this).
