22. I have a feeling.
It's because the republicans didn't like how he voted earlier this year, and threatened to get rid of him by supporting another republican in the primaries. Could be more republicans going over, or to independent before the next election if they think the party is going to try and boot them out and support more hardline candidates in the primaries!

I know he has been good friends with Biden for years and I know that Joe talked to him about switching a couple of times this year but never ever thought he would do it.

April 28, 2009

Statement by Senator Arlen Specter

I have been a Republican since 1966. I have been working extremely hard for the Party, for its candidates and for the ideals of a Republican Party whose tent is big enough to welcome diverse points of view. While I have been comfortable being a Republican, my Party has not defined who I am. I have taken each issue one at a time and have exercised independent judgment to do what I thought was best for Pennsylvania and the nation.

snip

I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary.

32. You know, there's definitely that...
He may be doing it to save his butt; however, read his statement:

"Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans."

Is there any doubt this is true as well?

Just........:wow:

He must've been REALLY raked over the coals by his fellow Republicans over his vote for Obama's stimulus plan. I thought that maybe his sudden opposition to EFCA was him trying to get back in his party's "good graces". Now that he's switching to Dem, will he now be supportive of EFCA? I wonder if he might be able to get Collins and Snowe to join him? I'm sure that with their votes for Obama's stimulus plan they've become pariahs in their party too. Of course, Specter had been facing a tough Republican primary for next year so is he just switching in an effort to keep his job? If he wants to run in the Democratic primary, he'll really have to demonstrate his new allegiance.

44. He will HAVE to perform on some of the big upcoming votes (e.g. health care)
Because democrats won't vote for him in the primary if he doesn't show some bona fides on a few of the big issues. So, in only temporarily, I think this is very good news for the administration's domestic policies.

48. Amazing! This is good for both us and him
I don't blame him at his age and health for not wanting a bruising primary battle with Toomey. And we get 60 votes once Franken is seated. The Repukes are turning themselves into a permanent minority of wingnuts. Come on, Snowe and Collins - the door is open!

I have decided that I will vote for Specter should he be the Democratic nominee, and I think it's almost certain he will be.
