CNN in third place in prime time for first time
By DAVID BAUDER – 4 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — CNN is poised to finish March third in the prime-time weeknight ratings behind Fox News Channel and MSNBC, the first time this has ever happened for the channel that pioneered the cable news genre nearly three decades ago.

CNN says its overall business is healthy and it is not straying from its straight news path. But it is suffering more audience erosion than its rivals since the peak days of the presidential election, further proof that the opinionated prime-time shows on Fox and MSNBC have greater audience loyalty.

CNN's weekday prime-time ratings are relatively flat compared to last year during the primary campaign, up 1 percent from March 2008, according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox's ratings have jumped 30 percent and MSNBC, the new No. 2, is up 24 percent. The biggest growth in cable news is for CNN's partner, Headline News, which is up 62 percent.

Fox remains on a mountain above its two closest competitors, with its prime-time audience in March more than that of MSNBC and CNN combined. "The O'Reilly Factor" has done particularly well, keeping more of its postelection audience than anything else on CNN and MSNBC.

Through Wednesday, Fox was averaging 2.73 million prime-time viewers in March. MSNBC had 1.16 million and CNN had 1.14 million. The March ratings period ends Friday, and it's doubtful CNN will be able to overcome MSNBC.

1. So will CNN give up competing with Fox, or will they just go for it
with all of the gusto that they can muster?

That is the question!

3. CNN is boring and lacking in good personalities.
Edited on Fri Mar-27-09 09:07 PM by Jennicut
Anderson Cooper and his pouty model face grate on my last nerve, Campbell Brown and her fake no bias goes over like a lead balloon, Larry King is way past his prime, Lou Dobbs is boring and a libertarian nutball jerk. Actually, Situation Room is the least grating of all the programs. That is the surprise.
CNN has 4 good people on it: Jack Cafferty, Gloria Borger, David Gergen (don't always agree with him but he is not a jerk), and Rick Sanchez.

16. I Agree with You
I've been a fan of Gloria Borger for a long time. Unlike most, she seems to take the time to think about her answers. I respect David Gergen and Jack Cafferty. Haven't seen Rick Sanchez enough to form an opinion.

Both Wolfie and Anderson were better as reporters rather than anchors and Campbell Brown needs to go away.

He Twittered before it was "cool". He has a liberal slant on the issues and questions/goes after Rethugs very well.

I agree with you for the most part, but Dobbs deserves more criticism. He's awful!! He's rude! He interrupts his guests, even the ones he agrees with, but if he doesn't agree with them, they don't stand a chance.

on many, many more cable outlets than MSNBC. I believe at one time they were. That's why BillO was having so many more viewers than Keith, even though Keith's ratings have steadily been improving.

Does anyone know?

That's the case with my local cable provider. If you want it, you have to buy the more expensive digital programming. The same goes for satellite TV. At least with Dish Network, MSNBC is not part of their basic package, while POX News is. You have to get the higher tier programming to get MSNBC.

stand MSNBC. I don't need pundits to tell me how to think! I especially dislike that skunk, Matthews! I think FOX is trying to go more to the center to keep their ratings up.

I prefer the PBS programs, i.e., Charlie Rose, Newshour with Jim Lehrer, BBC, Frontline, Washington Week,Bill Moyer's and my newest favorite is Nightly Business, it's great for financial news and a good barometer for the economy, some of it is dry, but it's a great resource.

I watch CNN for news sometimes, but again, don't care for the personalities. It would be nice to see some new faces...........

18. Hear, hear!!
I could have written the same thing. I would rather not watch TV at all than watch MSNBC. Many stopped watching it and went to FOX during the primaries when their biased became beyond evident and more than one pundit in that network had "tingling" feelings going up their legs. Matthews elicits nothing but disgust from me. I think that the guy is a sexist creep and Olbermann a self important windbag, the LW twin to RW O'Reilly. I would watch Maddow if she were on another network.

I also get my news from the outlets that you mention.

21. We we talking about their bias during the primaries.
Many Hillary supporters stopped watching MSNBC at the time and some, like myself, will never watch them again. To me they are not a good news network, others must think so too since their ratings are nothing to brag about. I just pretend they don't exist, I get far better news from other sources (and I don't mean FOX).

However, MSNBC recognized it and is beginning to kick ass because of it.

MSNBC will soon have all three hours of it's nightly Prime time programing filled with progressive shows; Olberman, Maddow and yet to be named....some say Ed Schultz, (I can think of many better than

I have no sympathy for the blind, ignorant idiot republicans making the decisions at CNN...maybe they deserve a bonus too?
