Why are some Democratic Senators so Pro Big Business they will destroy the environment?

Reuters:

Any climate bill that passes the Senate is unlikely to adhere to an Obama administration plan that the government auction all of the permits to emit greenhouse gases because it would be too harsh on big industry, a key democratic lawmaker said on Thursday.

Instead, Senator Jeff Bingaman said any system capping and trading emissions developed by Congress will likely include a mix of carbon allowances that are given to polluters -- like cement factories and coal-burning power plants -- and the sale of permits.

President Barack Obama promised during his presidential campaign that he would support a so-called cap and trade system that would put a price on carbon emissions that cause global warming. Obama's plan would require companies that emit more than the limit to purchase all emission permits, to help raise funds for clean energy technology.

So if you are a big polluter, pollute all you want? Grr.

1. We need an educational website: "How a Person becomes a Senator"
Pretty sure Big Business will feature prominently.

2. It might be that that impression - driven by the first sentence is written to make the Democrats

look bad. Look at it this way - in the past there were NO costs to throwing carbon in the air. Now, they will pay when they go over a limit - and over time as technology improves, the limits can be lowered. There is also really no contradiction with Obama's campaign plan. (He never said he was for Gore's carbon tax which does start at Zero.)

"Obama's plan would require companies that emit more than the limit to purchase all emission permits, to help raise funds for clean energy technology. That means you do not need carbon permits from the first drop emitted - just those over the limit. Nothing in Bingaman's comments lead me to reach your conclusion - that you can pollute all you want. In fact, the allowances in Bingaman's statement ARE the limits in Obama's.

This looks like creating dissension before it is there. (In fact, it resembles the "Obama promised no earmarks - when that is not what he said. To me, this is either sloppy reporting or a first step in raising the bar so Obama if he gains the major accomplishment of signing a cap and trade bill - will be said to have not kept a campaign promise.)

3. Fair point
And of course one does not know in what context those remarks were made either.

6. One word--Re-election
It's not about what they think is right, it's about what they need to do to stay in office.

The only thing that will cure that is term limits.
