Wow, what's wrong with Bob Dole?
It was nice for him to attend the Sebelius announcements - Senator Roberts was there as well, Brownback absent, not a surprise - but when President Obama walked out of the room with him he looked as stiff as a corpse, barely able to move. I thought he was going to topple over.

6. The guy's just shy of 90
Reaching that age after getting wounded as badly as he did in World War II isn't bad.
He bowed out from public life at the right time. My father in law was very badly wounded
at the Battle of Stalingrad, and he barely made it to age 73.

7. My guess is age and the wounds he took for all of us in WW II
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 01:22 PM by Botany
He lost the use of 1 arm and some major muscle groups of his torso
in Italy and he turns 86 this July.

Wiki

In 1942, Dole joined the United States Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II. He became a second lieutenant in the Army's 10th Mountain Division.
In April 1945, while engaged in combat in the hills of northern Italy, he was hit by German machine gun fire in his upper right back. His right arm was also badly injured. As Lee Sandlin describes, when fellow soldiers saw the extent of his injuries all they thought they could do was to "give him the largest dose of morphine they dared and write an 'M' for 'morphine' on his forehead in his own blood, so that nobody else who found him would give him a second, fatal dose."<5> He had to wait nine hours on the battlefield before being taken to the 15th Evacuation Hospital. He began a recovery that would last until 1948 at Percy Jones Army hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he met future fellow politicians Daniel Inouye and Philip Hart. His right arm was paralyzed; Dole often carries a pen in his right hand to signal that he cannot shake hands with that arm.

isn't bopping around the stage? Not to mention that he has serious war wounds.

14. I didn't expect him to 'bop' anywhere
I know he's old, and I know about his war wounds. This went beyond not being able to bop - he looked seriously ill, to the point of being almost immobile. I was hoping that perhaps someone here knew about a recent health condition and had something constructive to offer.

16. Dole is really really old. He was ancient when he ran for President and that was the mid 1990's.
Plus he had some war injuries. Nice to see him supportive of Sebelius. What happened to the days when Repubs used to be friends with people on the other side of the aisle. Those days are long gone.

21. Bob Dole and Bob Michel were the last of the honorable Republicans in Congress.
After them came Newt and his band of loonies.

22. Poor OLD Bob
Is OLD... OLD people sometimes get all stiff like that. A lot of OLD people don't want to stop working... I don't blame them.

Poor OLD Bob... I never agreed with his politics, but I hate to see any human being get OLD and stiff like that.

23. I know this will come as a shock, but 90 year olds look, well, old and close to death....
It's very rare to see a 90 year old who doesn't look like they're ready to pack it in. Such is life.

25. He had a severe health problem in 2004,
that compounded his limited mobility that were a result of his war injuries.

In December 2004, Dole had a hip-replacement operation, which required him to receive blood thinners. One month after the surgery it was determined that he was bleeding inside his head. He spent 40 days at Walter Reed, and when he was released, his "good" arm, the left, was of limited use. He told a reporter that he needed help to handle the simplest of tasks, since both of his arms are injured. He undergoes physical therapy for his left shoulder once a week, but doctors have told him that he might not regain total use of his left arm.
