Why doesn't Mitch or Judd switch to a yes vote so Brown doesn't have to leave his MOTHER'S WAKE
to fly in to vote.

if McConnell had any sense of decency he would do the following:

Vote for the stimulus package in the Senate.

Why? So that his colleague, Sherrod Brown, would not have to leave his mother’s wake (say that again, in all caps: HIS MOTHER’S WAKE) in Ohio, fly to DC, cast his vote, and then fly back to Ohio in time for his mother’s funeral (say that again, in all caps: HIS MOTHER’S FUNERAL) tomorrow.

I mean, there is no doubt that the bill will pass. There is no question that Brown’s vote will be the needed 60th to ensure passage. The only other option, the only other vote to provide the margin of those who voted at the last, procedural hurdle is Ted Kennedy, and he’s dealing with brain cancer (caps again: BRAIN CANCER), so it falls to Brown, trying to bury his mother, or some one Republican with a sense of decency sufficiently developed to switch his or her vote in Brown’s stead.

2. That's funny
You used McConnell and "decency" in the same sentence.

They don't care, that's why. Ideology before decency every single time.

10. Neither of my two republican senators would face and threat if they voted yes
I'm in Utah and Hatch and Bennett are gods here...well not HERE, not in MY HOUSE, but in the state.

Assholes.

3. I had immediately thought the same thing when I heard
that Brown has to fly back from his Mother'e funeral. For God's sake, is there NO ONE on the repub. side with any heart? The only few who would possibly have stepped up and done this are already voting yes, I think. But what a bunch of heartless, mean-spirited hacks.

4. Better yet, they could just give unanimous consent to waive the cloture vote and proceed

8. it's not cloture now, it takes 60 votes because it increases the deficit
apparently the Senate passed a law years ago that it would take 60 Senators to increase the deficit.

11. I think that's only if it goes through the budget reconciliation process
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 08:13 PM by Hippo_Tron
And the 60 is also only needed if somebody raises a point of order. Any way you look at it the senate can always ask for unanimous consent to suspend the rules.

5. If the quote about Specter is true in that other DU thread, lots of Repukes would vote YES except
for the fear of being primaried and exiled.

13. When Kennedy had to come back from cancer tratments to pass the bill..
...I mentioned that the GOP could gain brownie points by having one of their leaders agree to withhold their vote. It would have cost them nothing and displayed "bipartisanship". They could have looked good at NO cost and they were STILL too pig-headed to take free publicity. So yeah,Sherrod's got to take one for the team. But I sure as hell hope someone is keeping score.

18. EXACTLY!!!! Voinovich could have freakin' did it.
He was on the fence - he was one of the ones that almost voted for it.

He said on NPR that he decided not to because he wanted more money for sewer and water districts. Well... okay... but for crying out loud, you couldn't let that go and vote for a bill that you otherwise supported so that Sherrod didn't have to fly back from his mother's calling hours?

I am so pissed off at Voinovich right now.

He ISN'T EVEN RUNNING AGAIN!

He could have taken this moment to show a great deal of human compassion and good will. He could have been a man of integrity and honor. He chose not to. He sucks.

16. You expect human decency from that bug eyed bastard Mitch McConnell?
I doubt he knows the meaning of the words. And Judd Pigg made it clear where his loyalties were yesterday.

20. I agree 100% - but it should have been Voinovich to switch.
He has worked with Sherrod for years. I'm sure he knew Emily (Sherrod's mom) I would guess he's even going to the funeral.

He was on the fence.

He isn't running again.

He could have set an outstanding example of bipartisanship and honor.

22. So it cant be used against him later.
If the stimulus bill fails to solve our problems (I think it will, but anything could happen) and he's challenged in a primay by another GOP candidate, they'll say "he voted FOR the stimulus bill with the rest of the country KNEW it was wrong!!!!" and they will conveniently leave out the detail that he did it out of kindness.

You're thinking like a human being ... not like a politician. ;)
