V.P. Biden an embarrassment for prez?
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 08:57 PM by Beacool

From CNN’s Jack Cafferty:

“Barack Obama throws Joe Biden under the bus” is how one British newspaper describes the president’s little dig at his number two during last night’s press conference.

President Obama was asked about the Veep’s recent remark that even if the White House did everything right in combating the economic downturn, there’s a “30% chance we’re going to get it wrong.” The president grinned a little, saying he didn’t remember “exactly what Joe was referring to.” Smooth as ever, Mr. Obama went on to say that he wouldn’t assign a numerical value to all this. But given the magnitude of the problems we’re facing, no one single thing they do will solve all the problems.

But let’s get back to the vice president. During the campaign, folks were always wondering what would pop out of Biden’s mouth next. Biden has said “I never make any big, big gaffes”, but many would beg to differ.

Perhaps the biggest headache came in late October when his running mate suggested that Mr. Obama would be tested by an international crisis within his first six months in office, something the McCain camp seized on immediately.

And, it didn’t end on the campaign trail. During their first full day in office, Biden joked at a press conference about how his memory wasn’t “as good” as Chief Justice John Roberts’, who stumbled over the president’s oath of office. The president wasn’t laughing, and Biden later apologized to Roberts.

Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 02:14 PM by bunkerbuster1
Or the bit about how a new president will be tested? Those are the two in the last year I've heard regurgitated ad infinitum, and ya know, neither sounded like gaffes to me--they sounded like a childish media jumping on any story they could find.

(on edit) -- not jumping on the post, but more the notion that Biden is especially "gaffe prone." That sounds like a self-fulfilling meme. Sooner or later someone says something which, taken out of context, sounds weird.

115. The list goes back beyond his campaign with Obama
I agree the media takes full advantage of every gaffe, such as FDR firesides chats on the tv or telling the wheelchair bound man to stand up, but many in the party held their breath when his name was announced because he is known for it. I think it adds a quirky humor to him, and he's said nothing that I think is horribly shocking. But I do think it makes interesting conversation--it's what late night standup live for.

130. "I think it adds a quirky humor to him"
Agreed, fully. I think that's what gets confused with "gaffe prone."

I guess I sympathize with Biden a bit, because the only time I generally get myself in trouble is when I'm trying to be clever, and my spoken or written attempts at humor wind up sounding harsher or more mean-spirited than they ever were intended.

Ford's gaffes (which were mostly physical rather than verbal) seemed to endear people to him. It's probably one of the more positive things that are remembered about him.

Just for added information, doctors are wrong at least 10% of the time when making a diagnosis. The guy who reads your X-rays are wrong 30% of the time. Got this information from a book written by a doctor. Hey, even my post are sometimes wrong.

Or the joke of knowing how to deal with bad men? Or insisting that she and Obama were essentially tied - when they weren't and it was as pathetic as Lieberman claiming he was in a three way tie for third in NH - when he had less votes than the two he claimed to be tied with. Or theone who spoke of snipers in Bosnia?

The point is that you can make anyone look an embassament

131. They actually do - but here it seemed the OP was disingenuous
posting the op that put all Biden's gaffes to the fore and filtered out all the serious credible things he has said and done. My point was to show that you could pull together a similar embarrassing mix for any politician. I used HRC because the OP is a strong HRC supporter. But, ANY politician who has spent months in the intense near 16 hours a day spotlight could be diminished this way. Including Obama and including John Kerry.

Which is more inflammatory - an op with a subject asking if the VP is an embarrassment - or what I wrote? What would happen if there are a few HRC misstatements - and they likely will occur - and I posted Is HRC an embarrassment? It would be locked in a short interval - as this should have been.

25. Because politicians are expected to be programmed robots.
And he isn't. Yeah, sometimes it doesn't always come out right but he is an intelligent man, not a "Dan Quayle". He proved that in his debate against Phalin were he walked circles around her. He is down to earth and more real then a lot of politicians are and for some reason that just bothers the MSM and of course the right wing hates all Dems. I think Obama knew what Joe was like when he picked him so I don't think there is any "drama" - that is done out of sheer boredom because Obama is doing so well. Besides, we could have Evan Bayh or Tim Kaine right now as our VP. At least Biden has passion.

41. Not hated, as such, but he was for the bankruptcy 'reform' act of 2005...
I recall he was for the DMCA, or something to that effect and I recall not liking his vote on that either.

I know he's voted for things I've agreed with... and, back then, my mindset re: the DMCA was a bit different. In concept, it's not bad. In practice, the DMCA has been abused and hasn't done any one or any corporation much good (I recall Lexmark suing HP for a toner cartridge design made by HP for Lexmark while making its own cartridges for HP as well. Seems both companies could file the same suit. The DMCA is a load of nonsense and needs a proper review.)

Those are the only two negatives I recall; and of the two the bankruptcy reform one is more aggravating. I ultimately think he means well (he also voted for the ill-fated balanced budget amendment in 1998, or was it 1997), but given all the variables (job losses, job hopping, et al), there's much more going on with bankruptcy than just the poor sod who took the loans. :(

22. Would the President send an embarrassment to the Munich meeting to discuss Afghanistan
and our relations with NATO? This is a continuation of the nonsense in the campaign - where every word is parsed and then every awkward comment twisted to maximize the embarrassment factor. Biden has always had gaffes. Everyone does. But, there have been hundreds of pictures where Biden is with the President - if he were an embarrassment, you wouldn't see him and he would have no role. Instead this is his second major foreign policy trip and he has a hand in domestic issues as well.

He's bound to make some mistakes or say something a little odd at some point. For the most point, Biden is a smart man, who knows politics and policy and he has a solid voting record. He's a serious policy thinker, so while he might make some verbal slip ups he's a huge asset in every other area.

Obama knew what he was getting when he picked Biden for VP. and i'm sure Biden knows and doesn't mind OBama's reaction which is not always in agreement.

I don't want to see the press trying to make him a buffoon and I don't want Obama to fall into the trap of Quaylizing his own VP.

I hope Pres. Obama NEVER says another joking or patronizing word about Joe in the future because it will diminish Joe (who doesn't deserve it) and put a cloud over Obama's own judgment. Don't fall for it, Mr. President!

Yep that right wing newspaper has hit the button right again.

I don't think Obama has thrown Biden under the bus. If Biden turns out to be a terrible VP then guess what? We'll be having Obama/Someone else in 2012.

Nope, Joe Biden happens to have something I kinda like about the guy. He's a human being. And yes he'll make gaffes. But unlike a certain ex-President, he'll kind of own up to them.

Jesus Christ, let's cut this FOOLISH SHIT !! Is this all people have to do? Parse a person's every fucking utterance? Obama hit is right, and he DID NOT throw this EXCELLENT Vice President under a bus. What a bunch of SHIT !! All Biden was saying was that there are no perfect answers to the problems, and that there is risk with whatever course of action in taken in this unprecedented situation. He was being HONEST and REAL !! Obama has essentially said that exact same thing. Did Bush and his assholes EVER ONCE show such HONESTY !! Remember how sweet and peachy the Iraq Invasion was supposed to turn out according to those ASSHOLES ! Yes, maybe Biden should not have assigned a numerical value, but let's get off the silly semantics. He was just saying that there is some measure of risk in whatever course is taken, but also that we MUST do SOMETHING and something BIG and BOLD and NOW !! Earlier when he talked about Obama being "tested," MANY on both sides said the EXACT SAME THING about whoever was elected the next president. AND, he went on to say that Obama would pass the "test" with a "spine of steel." So enough of this silly shit. Get a life and move.

73. Joe Biden reminds me of Pope John XXIII
Both men, while having positions of great importance, still maintain a sense of humor. For example, a reporter ask Pope John if he was infalliable and John answered smiling, "Infalliable? Infalliable? I am John." The high ranking Church prelates almost had a stroke. He was the one who had the courage to open Vatican II against the opposition of all the conservatives who were determined to maintain the status quo.

We should all be supporting our President and VP, not posting anti-Dem propaganda OPs.

Unfortunately, for the corporate whore media, no matter HOW MUCH they want it to be so, Biden will, sadly, never rise to the same level of embarrassment as Bush did as President or Sarah Palin did as a VP nominee (it still feels surreal thinking about the fact that Biden actually had a "debate" with her and people took it seriously).
