Poll: Obama Way Ahead Of GOP On Stimulus
By Eric Kleefeld - February 9, 2009, 9:30AM

A new Gallup poll shows that President Obama is continuing to enjoy high approval in handling the economic stimulus debate -- and his brand is solidly beating the Congressional Republicans, too.

The numbers: Obama has a 67% approval and only 25% disapproval on how he's handled the stimulus bill, compared to Congressional Republicans' 31% approval and very high 58% disapproval. Congressional Democrats aren't as popular as Obama himself -- explaining the GOP's efforts to tie the bill to Nancy Pelosi, instead of Obama -- but they're still in the black at 48%-42%.

In addition, a 51% majority of independents say it is critically important to pass a stimulus bill, 27% say it is moderately important, and only 17% say it's not important. The numbers among the Republican base, as we might expect, are wildly different: Only 29% say it is critically important, 37% say it's important but not critically so, and 31% say it's not important.

1. It doesn't take a genius to dislike the GOP's "ideas"
1. Tax cuts (as if Bush's $1.3 trillion in tax cuts were not enough)
2. Do nothing (Hooverites)

2. The GOP looks like the obstructionist jerks they are even with
their media blitz and grandstanding. Most American people realize the President has walked into a mess and he's working to get us out of it. Those who stand in the way will pay for it later.

4. Very glad to hear that. MSM and others
keep hammering away at how Obama's numbers are dropping over this and how everyone opposes the stimulus. Strangely, everyone I know, though, including some mildly conservative friends, like what Obama is doing and see the Republicans as obstructionist.

Why are we not surprised? Lots of people here were worried too. No problem, Obama is popular.

6. I'm confused. Didn't we see poll numbers last week showing a loss of support for his package?
It was during the week's 2 to 1, Repubs over Dems, media coverage...

10. Rasmussen has a different view--Can anyone explain it?
With the Senate poised to vote Tuesday on an $827-billion version of the economic recovery plan, 62% of U.S. voters want the plan to include more tax cuts and less government spending.

11. Some fun facts about Rasmussen...
but I'm sure his polls aren't skewed in any way. Maybe it's just who they ask?

Polling

In 1995, he founded a polling company called GrassRoots Research.<1> In 1999, his company Rasmussen Research was bought by TownPagesNet.com for about $4.5 million in ordinary shares.<5> As of 2008, Scott Rasmussen is the CEO of Rasmussen Reports (a separate company) and describes himself as having been an independent public opinion pollster for more than a decade.<6> He received $95,500 from the Republican National Committee and $45,500 from the George W. Bush presidential campaign as a campaign consultant for the 2004 presidential election.<7>

Religious activities

Scott Rasmussen is an Evangelical Christian and is president of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, a not-for-profit corporation with historic ties to the United Methodist Church and the Wesleyan tradition. The Camp Meeting founded the town of Ocean Grove, New Jersey in 1869 and maintains a Christian seaside resort community providing opportunities for spiritual birth, growth, and renewal.

17. Different questions asked
Opinion polling is very sensitive to the wording and tone of questions. It may be that many people have had the idea that tax cuts are good and spending is bad drummed into them. Yet watching the process, likely not all that attentively, they do see that the Democrats are working to fix the problem, while the Republicans heckle. McCain, Shelby and (I think) Steele made a HUGE error in calling the plan that will get 60 votes not bipartisan. The better move would have been to declare victory for the changes.

I also think that Americans are not buying the idea that the Democrats had all teh control for the last two years - which means they saw that BUSH got almost everything he wanted and the Democrats eked out a few very hard fought wins.

14. Even for Congressional Democrats, 48%-42% is great
given past numbers for either side of Congress. Compared to Congressional Republicans' 31% approval and very high 58% disapproval, this poll should terrify the Republicans. This shows that, in spite of constant talk radio and the cable shows covering far more Republicans than Democrats - and even including audio to what they had to say, the Republicans are the seen as negative. (I really did not like having to hear Shelby this morning on CNN and then a bit later hear their talking head while a silent video Of Kerry speaking was shown in an insert - that was their coverage of what happened Saturday. (Now Kerry does beat Shelby on looks, but as big as that difference is, the difference in how much sense they made in what they said was far greater.)

18. Good point - it would be great on nonpartisan blogs for everyone to
highlight those numbers and put up that link. (a good version of the RW repeating things ad nauseum - the difference being ours would be true. Watching the Senate - hearings and floor debate - this is a tough, hard, time consuming job to be a GOOD Senator. The RW has completely distorted that to the point of almost saying they never work. They deserve more respect.)

15. So the public basically trusts the President, is somewhat wary of the plan itself.
Fine by me. I'm sure it's more or less what the Administration expected.

but they're "failing"!!!!1!!
