Quinnipiac poll finds Gillibrand favored more among Republicans than Dems
The new Quinnipiac poll (dated Monday, January 26, 2009) finds that voters approve the choice of Kirsten Gillibrand, 46-30. But with all the controversy about her conservative stances on guns and immigration, she gets higher support among Republicans (56-27) than she does among Democrats (41-35).

There is more to it that this first nugget, all of which is info to interpret as you choose.

1. This will gradually change, as she votes with Obama in most issues
Right now, everyone is talking about her pro-gun, anti-illegal-immigration stance, but once she starts voting in favor of the many liberal positions that she supports, Democrats will get to know her and some Republicans will be disappointed.

Also note that New York Republicans are less conservative than the average national Republican.

2. I can only hope you're right, and thank you for your calm logic...
much appreciated.

I've been way too frenetic over this issue than is healthy or useful... even though it seems important enough to get all riled about.

I don't understand the delineations of NY partisan definitions, myself, and I'm from the southernmost edge of Gillibrand's district (Dutchess Co.) and have lived in Albany and Manhattan...

Maybe that's why I don't understand partisan definitions in general... NY is goofy, politically - just seems to be a mix of just about every ideology you could think of (and likely several you can't!)...

Thanks for the "talking down", even though I'm still rather mystified by this process and this pick... I don't get it on many levels, but I DO appreciate your sense of balance.

I bet they have a snow day today! : )

12. She's a Blue Dog, the group of Dems most likely to obstruct Obama's agenda.
The past is prologue.

Forewarned is fair-warned.

3. I don't live in NY anymore
but I'm going to give her a chance and see how she does. If she's not that favorable among NY democrats, then there will be primary challenges against her in 2010 and the voters will decide. I know enough NY Democrats (I am from NY) to influence a few votes.

4. Maybe that's because she's from a Republican district and it's mainly Repubs familiar with her?

As a liberal out on Long Island I certainly hadn't heard of her before this.

But I'm perfectly happy with her record and accomplishments and to give her a chance.

5. 2/3 of the people polled voted that they havn't heard enough, so they didn't vote
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:13 AM by mtnsnake
either way, favorable or unfavorable. They voted "haven't heard enough", while only a small percentage chose "favorable" or "unfavorable".

Your poll is mostly a poll about the way Governor Paterson handled his appointment of her, and with only a tiny minority knowing enough about her, your thread title is completely misleading. Once the great majority (and I would say 2/3 is a great majority) of people get to know her, then and only then will you see a correct reflection in any poll.

13. the poll doesn't reflect the 50K Paterson got from her largest donor
and ex-employer - oh - a few days after Kennedy announced her interest (or even leave Kennedy out of it - after Clinton was given the nod for SoS?

That make you feel as tolerant? It doesn't help me any, try as I might. It's really amazing that we say we don't tolerate pay-for-play (however "legal" - doesn't make it right or ethical or tolerable... ) in one case and don't at least inquire about it in another?

That just doesn't seem cricket to me....

6. I may be odd here but I think she was a brilliant pick
she can win the seat. That's important, for Obama, the country AND New York.

7. She was a brilliant pick but of course the usual naysayers will hone in on her 1 or 2 negatives
and harp on and on until eternity about those instead of considering the entire picture.

14. I agree 100%
She is going from representing a conservative Congressional district to representing one of the most Democratic States in the Union.

Of course her positions are going to move to the left and of course she is a brilliant politician if she can win in that district twice.

8. In other words, she'll be hard to run against
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:22 AM by BeyondGeography
Unless you come at her from the left on issues the broader state doesn't really care about (and that's not gay marriage, which she is for).

Try not to fuck it up, NY Dems.

9. Sen. Tracy Flick is a DINO on Bush tax cuts, gun control, immigration, corporate tax cuts...
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:35 AM by ClarkUSA
Is anyone really surprised? She'll pull a Mitt Romney within the week, though, because she is a political opportunist who
"wants to follow in Hillary's footsteps."

Gillibrand 2016!!

11. She has an impressive following among Republicans, ,so far...
we'll know in less than one week if she supports Obama's bailout plan as it is written now.
