What's Drudge trying to imply with this "No Bible" at oath blaring headline?
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 10:40 AM by Adenoid_Hynkel
-That Obama isn't really sworn in as president? Is that kind of like the recession that's only in our heads?
-That this was all part of a top secret plot involving the rightwing Supreme Court chief justice to allow Obama a loophole to not touch a Bible, stay a muslim and enact his plot to enslave all whites, before turning the presidency over to William Ayers?

If it's on Drudge, it will be their meme of the day on talk radio.

Christ, do these guy have anything left? This is almost funny how bad they're getting.

1. Do the eyes of the RW radio followers not work? That was a Bible. A HUGE Bible.
And CNN and PBS were going on and on about it being Lincoln's Bible. Lincoln- the one president the RW loves to remind everyone was a Republican.

19. that huge bible was for Biden. Don't know whose it was originally. Lincoln's (the one used by Obama)
during the ceremony was quite small.

Biden and Obama used different bibles that day.

22. It's Biden' family bible, been around for generations
...He always uses it when being sworn in. Family tradition and all that.

...yesterday, they didn't have bibles. Drudge is just throwing scraps to his people.

I guess Obama will simply have to take a third oath.

18. No oath is required. It doesn't change a thing.
Barack Obama became President at 12 PM EDT on January 20, 2009. These people don't want to accept that reality, but the 20th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States explicitly states that the transfer of power occurs regardless of the oath of office. Obama became President before he ever took the oath the first time around.

28. The oath is required
Before he actually did anything "executive", he needed to recite those exact words as they are written in the constitution. But 2 presidents got sworn in on the constitution (a great idea) and LBJ didn't use a bible either.

29. Except that they don't even have to say the entire oath
Some presidents simply said "I do" after it was recited by the Chief Justice. Plus, the 20th Amendment clearly states that new President takes over on January 20th at noon. The section in the Constitution about the oath does not say when he has to say it.

This entire issue is blown completely out of proportion.

32. I agree it's a ridiculous issue
But whether it's the officer of the court or the President, those words must be spoken. As for the when:

Before he enter on the Execution of his office, he shall take take the following
oath or affirmation

30. "So help me God" isn't even part of it
why do these religious busybodies always have to add this stuff in? It's hilarious. They add "under god" to the pledge of allegiance and create a controversy. Same thing here. All ridiculous.

9. Ya don't need a damned bible.
There's nothing about in the Constitution.

I swore an oath in court here in L.A. yesterday with no bible, and no "so help me God" and the firmament didn't crack.

20. Found a site...
It's not a Constitutional requirement that an incoming president use a bible at his swearing-in, although most have.

This site says that Theodore Roosevelt didn't use a bible at his first inauguration, in 1901...

31. These bible/oath panic swells are extremely heartening to me, actually...

It means a) they have nothing better to go after, and b) there isn't anything worse for them to find.

I think we should take it as a positive sign that there is nothing but childish ridiculous nothingness behind their superficial outrage.

It's sort of sad and funny at the same time.
