As promised, we are having a username-change amnesty period which will last from now until January 31, 2009. That gives everyone ten days to decide whether to change your name.

Our last username-change amnesty period was four years ago, following the 2004 presidential campaign. We probably won't hold another one until 2012 or 2016, so this is your big chance.

If you don't have a good reason to change your username, we would strongly suggest that you not do so. Username-changes are confusing and a little disruptive, which is why we do them very rarely. Last time we did this, a few people changed their usernames on a whim, then regretted it later and asked to change back. DON'T MAKE THAT MISTAKE. I can't remember if we granted their requests last time, and I'm hoping I don't have to deal with it this time.

Individuals who choose to change their usernames will have an automated signature line appended to all of their posts, which tells the world your former DU identity. This will make it easier for everyone to know who all these new people with the strange usernames are. This signature will appear for one month.

I changed my identity back in 2007 to "TheDoorbellRang," but before that I was "DVJNU" -- I wasn't patient enough to wait for a username amnesty. Is it all right with you if I change my username from my old name instead of my new one? That way my record would show when I really joined DU (2005 instead of 2007). Petty, I know.
To clarify for anyone, I could put a reference to my "TheDoorbellRang" journal in with my new identity.
