Excuses, excuses
Well yet again, we have a situation where an Obama event that promised a gay presence failed to deliver. After the naming of Warren for the Inagural we got Robinson named to give the invocation for this concert. While everyone denied that this was in any way related to Warren, the implication was clear. Fundies got their preacher and we got ours. So with baited breath I tuned into HBO and expected to see Robinson. Well, we know how that worked out.

Excuse number 1 Blame HBO.

Here are the facts. HBO agreed to a two hour concert, carried live from 2:30 until 4:30. The time was set at least a week in advance as those of us with DVR's can attest and therefore known to all involved. A rehersal was held on Saturday where timing issues were clearly worked out. Yet Robinson gave his invocation at 2:20, outside the window, and wasn't broadcast. Yet the Obama inaguration website had this:

2:30 p.m. - The Lincoln Memorial
President-elect Barack Obama with the help of an all-star line-up of talent will kick off the inaugural celebration in Washington, D.C., with a free and open event at the Lincoln Memorial, between Constitution Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW on 23rd Street.

Musical performers scheduled for the event include Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Heather Headley, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, John Mellencamp, Usher Raymond IV, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder.

Among those reading historical passages will be Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III, Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington. The Rt. Reverend V. Gene Robinson will give the invocation. Rob Mathes will be the music director and arranger for the backing band, which will support all of the artists. Additional performers will be announced as they are confirmed.

The Reflecting Pool area, JFK Hockey Fields and Constitution Gardens are open to the public and space will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 8:00 a.m.

end of quote

Nowhere does it mention to anyone who might want to go to HBO to watch the event that Robinson was speaking before the coverage began. It clearly gives a 2:30 start time. Yet Robinson spoke at 2:20 which the Obama team had to have known on Saturday yet this text, which clearly implies that Robinson would be part of the program, are still on that website today. HBO didn't schedule this, Obama's team did. The lack of coverage isn't HBO's fault. It is the inaguration committee's fault, plain and simple.

Excuse number 2

Prayers don't belong at concerts so what is the big deal. Well first, we know the Obama campaign's position on prayer at concerts when the prayer is given by McClurkin. So that is hard to take now. But the solution was don't invite him, it isn't to invite him, make a big deal of having invited him, let everyone believe he will be on TV, and then let him not be there. We were expecting to see him, it was a reasonable expectation, and it didn't happen.

Stop blaming HBO, stop pretending we weren't told this was in part to make up for Warren, and for once, admit, Obama's team decided that it was perfectly OK to use Robinson as a prop to get out of a jam and then when they didn't want to make room for him just discard him. That is what happened.

1. HBO televised THE CONCERT. Robinson was NOT part of the concert. The Gay Men's Chorus was.
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 11:08 AM by cryingshame
that isn't an excuse. It's reality.

Sorry I got wrapped up in the outrage for a few minutes this morining. Just had to do a little research to find out the actual truth.

How about starting a thread appreciating the Gay Men's Chorus or kicking a thread from yesterday about them?

Is it because you'd have to admit the Gay Community WAS included in the Inauguration Concert and a GLBT group was televised performing in front of America?

I didn't even know about that Chorus until just now cause I didn't log on yesterday or watch HBO's coverage.

4. You can believe whatever you want. I care about the actual work of changing the country.
And DADT will be repealed under Obama. I suppose that counts for nothing?

Give me substantive change over showmanship anyday...
I feel you are missing the big picture.

12. Make it Jan 20th, 2013 and you are on!
He's got so much to try to push through Congress, I don't think anyone can promise anything for sure in 2 years. But I AM confident he will do this by the end of his first term.

6. Rev. Robinson's invocation was beautiful
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 11:11 AM by HughMoran
I'm glad it was posted here. I am not religious and I normally hate when they broadcast the stupid invocations - I usually flip the channel. In this case however, a lot of people actually wanted to see his invocation due to the historic nature of it, so what does HBO do? They do what most stations do and don't show it. They should have known that this was a special invocation and broadcast it. I think Obama's people should have ensured that this was broadcast and deserve criticism for not doing so.

9. I wish I could understand your outrage
but I don't. I have been to tons of televised events in my life. The prayer before the event has never been televised. It's not some big conspiracy. It's just the way things are done. I'm beginning to think some on here will never be happy.

18. Here is where I am at today
I am watching Dr King's wonderful speech on CNN. I am remembering marching as a child to desegregate my community. I am basking in the glory of seeing something I never thought would happen in my lifetime - a black man becoming president.

The first social justice cause I embraced was the Civil Rights struggle which accelerated when I was a child. So this day is very special to me and tomorrow will be even more special.

And I know that if we can take the struggle of the African Americans to this point and gain this victory then other injustices can also be corrected. So I have hope for gay rights, the persecuted Palestinians and people living in poverty in this nation.

One step at a time. Today is a very important step. Instead of seeing it as a day that excludes gay people, I see hope that in 4 years we will look back and be grateful we were able to gain equal rights for our gay community.

Dr Joseph Lowery said it far better than I can. I was there when he gave a speech about unity among all of us who struggle for civil rights and justice. I try to keep his words in mind as I continue to speak out against injustice.

20. It's double standards again.
People are going to rationalize why it's perfectly normal and okay and expected for Warren's prayers to be on TV but for Robinson's to be deliberately left out. People are going to rationalize why Warren should be on TV, but Robinson shouldn't.

Warren being on TV is apparently no big deal, and Robinson not being on TV is also apparently no big deal. We're supposed to believe that the fact that the homophobe is the one that gets broadcast, and the one who Opposes bigotry didn't is purely coincidental.

I don't believe that at all. Someone on staff stuffed Robinson into the schedule in an effort to appease us and shut us up, but also made sure he wouldn't be heard nationally because they probably didn't want him representing the inauguration. Isn't that the definition of a Token? You're there, but you're not allowed to be heard.

21. Imaginary snubs, imaginary snubs.
Obama snubbed Hillary Clinton when he didn't shake her hand on the senate floor.

Obama snubbed John McCain when he flipped him off while scratching his nose.

Obama snubbed Sarah Palin when he used the phrase "lipstick on a pig."

Obama snubbed Howard Dean when he had a ceremony for new DNC head Kaine.

Obama snubbed Bishop Robinson when Robinson gave a scheduled prayer at 2:20, and HBO wasn't scheduled to begin broadcast until 2:30.
