Rev Robinson's Invocation

Gene Robinson's Invocation at the Inauguration's Opening Ceremony

Following is the text of the invocation given by Bishop V. Gene Robinson at the opening ceremonies of President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration. Robinson delivered the prayer at the base of the Lincoln Memorial facing a crowd said to be in the millions that filled the stretch of the National Mall all the way to the base of the Washington Monument.

Good afternoon,

Before this celebration begins, please join me in pausing for a moment to ask God’s blessing upon our nation and our next president.

Oh God of our many understandings, we pray that you will bless us with tears, tears for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women in many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die a day from malnutrition, malaria and AIDS.

Bless this nation with anger – anger at discrimination at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants; women, people of color; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Bless us with discomfort at the easy simplistic answers we prefer to hear from our politicians instead of the truth about ourselves and our world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

Bless us with patience and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be fixed any time soon and the understanding that our next president is a human being, not a messiah. Bless us with humility, open to understanding that our own needs as a nation must always be balanced with those of the world.

Bless us with freedom from mere tolerance, replacing it with a genuine respect and warm embrace of our differences.

Bless us with compassion and generosity, remembering that every religion’s God judges us by the ways we care for the most vulnerable. And God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office fo the president of the United States. Give him wisdom beyond his years, inspire him with President Lincoln’s reconciling leadership style, President Kennedy’s ability to enlist our best efforts, and Dr. King’s dream of a nation for all people.

Give him a quiet heart, for our ship of state needs a steady calm captain. Give him stirring words, we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

Make him color blind reminding him of his own words that under his leadership there will be neither red nor blue states but a United States. Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination that he might seek to change the lives of those who are still its victims.

Give him strength to find family time and privacy and help him remember that even though he is president, a father only gets one shot at his daughters’ childhoods. And please God, keep him safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents and we’re asking far too much of this one, we implore you oh good and great God to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand that he might do the work that we have called him to do. That he might find joy in this impossible calling and that, in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity and peace.

Amen.

My preference would have had Rev Robinson give the Invocation after the national anthem (ensuring everyone saw it) and then sit and join the Obama's in viewing the concert.

15. Wow. Talk about down to earth. That was solid.
I've missed all of the celebration due to just not knowing where to see it. And being utterly sick. But I'm back. And this was a speech that reverberated within my soul.

This is the kind of talk I do within my own mind. I do that. I think we all do. But I rarely hear it outside of myself.

I almost have to laugh at how sad it is that the rich were foremost on the minds of the people who took over the White House these last dark eight years.

Well, let there be light.

Never in my life, have I EVER heard a prayer interrupted by so much applause and cheering by a lot of people before. Literally everyone around me cheered after the following lines:

- Bless this nation with anger – anger at discrimination at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants; women, people of color; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

- Make him color blind reminding him of his own words that under his leadership there will be neither red nor blue states but a United States. 51. I don't think you have enough info to say that
There are two options:

1) When preparing the 2 hr coverage, the concert organizers were unwilling to cut down or exclude any of the celebrities in order to fit the prayer in to that time

2) HBO told them to fill the 2 hr concert with celebs and singers only and that even if they could squeeze everyone in to 2 hrs, the prayer part wouldn't be shown regardless.

I actually think option 2 is closer to the truth. How often do you see prayers featured on HBO?

But HBO did not produce the stage show, they broadcast it as produced. And they say:

79. you wrongly assumed Bishop Robinson's
Invocation would be televised. Bishop Robinson's Invocation was meant for the audience in attendance--the concert was meant for the TV viewers. HBO only paid for 2hrs, not 125 minutes. A performer would have needed to be cut in order for Robinson to be in the televised portion.

Most of the womens' rights organizations have been protesting Rick Warren as well Most of them of course have been completely ignored by the media. Hits too close to home so to speak. Too many might identify finally with someone protesting Rick Warren. But Barack Obama is aware of the protests. And doesn't believe women have a right at the table unless of course they serve the dynasty of the dominionists as someone in Washington called it not long ago reflecting on their rise to power.

I put this on yesterday and only got 10 recs for it - I hope more then that signed it -

Email request sent out today by Human Rights Campaign in the words of Rev. V. Gene Robinson:

Though many of us were deeply upset when President-elect Obama chose Proposition 8 supporter Rev. Rick Warren to speak at his inauguration, the fact that he also invited me – a proud gay man – is a hopeful sign of our president's commitment to reach out to all Americans.

Now it's up to all of us to capitalize on this moment and ensure that President-elect Obama works for equality.

Join me in asking Obama to take the next step by supporting HRC's Blueprint for Positive Change – a roadmap for LGBT equality.

As a gay American, a bishop, and a member of HRC's Religion Council, I was open about my shock and anger last month at Warren's invitation.

But I now feel it's time to turn the page on that controversy – to come together and tackle the next set of challenges.

The blueprint calls for President-elect Obama to sign hate crimes legislation into law, to support a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act, to end unequal taxation of domestic partnerships and more.

In the spirit of hope, we ask President-elect Obama to follow this blueprint and keep his promises.

Tomorrow, I will be blessed to stand at the Lincoln Memorial before the next leader of our great country. His message has inspired countless Americans who have waited many long years to feel represented by their government.

I owe President-elect Obama the utmost thanks for allowing me to participate in such a historic event.

Whether you're religious or not, gay or straight, please stand with me – declare your support for HRC's Blueprint for Positive Change and ask your friends and family to do the same.

Please sign the petition here:

81. What am I missing?
Warren will have an international audience, with a reputation of hatred that precedes him. The Bishop only had those in front of him, and the few who will read his words.

Disappointment with Obama is an understatement.

60. best part: understanding that our next president is a human being, not a messiah
Some of our expectations are above and beyond practical. I didn't like the hyperbolic language in the posts about CA prop 8. I didn't appreciate impugning motives first.

This prayer is what I would pray for too. I listened to this man on NPR and liked what he had to say and the way he said it.

It's exactly how I'd structure my pleas before God. I think the fact that this brother in faith made it his business to address the breadth of religious conviction by saying "Oh God of our many understandings" shows at least he understands there more than one way of living out our faith traditions. I wish some of that understanding was accepted by the religious right and the parts of the nonreligious left.

He gets an A for that.

I'll wait and see what Obama is going to do by his legislative pushs, deeds beyond optics, and whether he does the right thing without playing with half measures.

64. Sorry it's inadequate for you
I thought the whole point of this thread was that the media, apparently, did not cover this portion of the Inaugural concert. Why, then, would you be expecting a picture perfect video? Perhaps you should do your own research and come up with a better version.

Thanks for noting the inadequacy of my link.

69. You go, Rev. Robinson.
As a secular person, I don't have much use for prayer. But there are ceremonial times, when someone has to "say the words" to set the tone for the spirit of the occasion.

I think Rev. Robinson did a beautiful job.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWWAnitUCw4&eurl=http://blog.christianitytoday.com/ctpolitics/2009/01/gay_bishop_kick.html&feature=player_embedded

The audio and microphone sound was on the whole time. I read that at least one of the large speakers was the issue, so that would explain why parts of the large crowd couldn't hear.

78. I don't normally pay attention to these invocations
It's usually change the channel or take a pee time, but this invocation is unusual in that it was the first time an openly gay person has delivered such an invocation. I realize that this one was never broadcast, but if it had been (and I got HBO), I would have made an effort to watch him deliver this. His words are beautiful, succinct (as all invocations are), and most of all welcoming to all Americans. Thanks for posting this.

87. NOT shown on TV ...
In a conversation with this writer, Jeff Cusson, Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs for HBO, confirmed that HBO was not involved in the decision to move Bishop Robinson's remarks to a time prior to the beginning of the actual broadcast:

"HBO had no involvement in the scheduling of those who appeared as part of the televised event. You'll have to talk to PIC about all of the scheduling decisions. We had a set broadcast time and went forth accordingly."

HBO sources were earlier quoted by AfterElton.com as saying:

"The producer of the concert has said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee made the decision to keep the invocation as part of the pre-show."

Bless you, Pastor Gene Robinson for your words of reconciliation.

I'm grateful you were chosen to give this prayer at the opening ceremonies.

You and Barack Obama have a great deal in common. And that comes through in your message.

As a gay man, I look at you today with even more admiration than before.

I agree. It STINKS that this beautiful, thoughtful invocation wasn't viewed by a national TV audience, BUT we know that we can communicate FAR beyond the Tee-Vee.

I will be forwarding this prayer and this DU thread so others can experience these words and the ideas contained in them.

This thread has links to youtube videos ... let's all get the grassroots moving and get these words out there for all to see and hear.

UPDATE: A PIC source reports that some clips from the Lincoln Memorial event, including Bishop Robinson's prayer, will be played on the Mall prior to the swearing in ceremony. In addition, HBO's Cusson has also confirmed that the cable outlet will include Bishop Robinson's appearance and prayer in its re-broadcast of the event.
