2. I checked other.
I thought it was pretty good, though there were some awkward moments, like what was with the presentation of the eagles? They looked like they were gonna fly away.

I thought Tom Hanks's presentation was a little long, but that's just my opinion.

Overall, I thought the music was pretty good.

4. What Concert ?
I see lots of people talking about it, but I have ZERO access to it ...

Why ? .... Because I dont have HBO ....

In fact: Even though I have BASIC cable through Comcast, It will not be shown on ANY channel I have available to me ....

Which brings up a question: WHY is this event, one of the most significant public events in our time, being PRIVATIZED and DENIED to the general public ?

I would dearly love to see this celebratory event, and become a part of it in that way, but it has been cutoff from my access ..... I cannot afford to add paid cable in my tight budget (My basic cable is provided free in my rental) .... I am sure I am not alone amongst my fellow citizens who are also unable to buy cable ....

So .... Why is this grand PUBLIC event being held in private hands ?

9. That is going to be real helpful ...
to all the poor people who dont have internet access ....

My internet access is less than ideal .... but that is not my point ...

This event should NOT be 'owned' by a private television channel ....

Perhaps we might rename this whole ordeal: "HBO PRESENTS: The US Presidential Inauguration Celebration"

Brought to you by; HBO, Coca Cola, ETrade and TOYOTA !

10. Basic Cable + Dial-Up Internet = No Concert.
I was really looking forward to it, too, and was sorely disappointed upon learning that it wasn't going to be televized on the news channels the way the Clinton Inaugural Concert was.

Oh well.

39. Which channel ?
If it's above 71, it doesnt exist ....

Again: I am one of tens of millions who dont have HBO access ....

While I do have internet, live streaming video works poorly, and ....

There are tens of millions of VERY good people who, through the unfortunate fact that they are poor, simply cannot afford things like computers or cable ....

I am simply a bit pissed that HBO is the 'owner' of what should be a 'public' celebration ....

It's as if the inauguration is the fucking Super Bowl, and the many aspects of it are for sale, to be sold to the highest bidder ...

Well ...

8. Did you do "Due Diligence" and contact your cable company?
As well, the concert was shown on line.

You can watch the "We Are One Concert" live streaming online via http://www.hbo.com /

HBO will be bringing the pre-inaugural concert to everyone live starting at 2PM ET/11.30AM PT, Sunday.

Most TV stations may broadcast the concert live at the same time schedules. Note that all times are Pacific Time Zone

12. What is HBO ?
Most people actually dont have HBO ..... Do you realize that ?

I havent watched an HBO channel in over 3 years ....

There are LOTS of other channels available to everyone .... the broadcast chanels come to mind, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc etc ....

Live Streaming Video is very poor here ....

My point is this: Where does the idea of exclusivity fit when ALL people are hungry for change ?

And thanks for the list of wonderful artists I will NOT see ...

37. No .. actually ....
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 06:57 PM by Trajan
I already mentioned how MANY others do not have such access ....

I mentioned how THEY will also miss out ....

You would think, according to your comments, that I would be VERY pleased if I had exclusive viewing rights, and that all the other 'victims' could go piss up a fucking rope .... because I am thinking about ME and ME alone .... right ?

Well .... I would like to see it, yes, but my primary objection is to making this event HBO EXCLUSIVE to begin with .....

It isnt about ME being unable to see it, it is about EVERYBODY who cannot see it ....

So .... Piss up a fucking rope ....

21. Hey there ....
My cable is so basic: It is just a cable, with no box ....

I get all channels through 71 (except Oxygen is scrambled on CH68)

They moved MSNBC to CH 128 about 18 months ago, and I havent watched it ever since ....

I am sure many other comcast clients have the same problem ....

This should not have been an exclusive HBO feed: It should have been shared so ALL americans should watch it ...

Comcast will give you a cable box to use at no extra charge if you just go ask them. That's what I did so that it would work with my Tivo (a hand-me-down with a lifetime subscription, I don't pay for it either).

15. I'm going to watch it AGAIN! I missed the first part of it.
I think of it more as an exorcism not just of Bush/Cheney, but of the cultural division that has been festering in this country for the past 20 to 25 years.

Obama knows that we have to get some healing done before we can accomplish anything.

Also, Frenchie! A lot of those tunes were gauged to appeal to people of (ahem!) a certain age, I think...maybe somewhere around 50? When I heard "American Pie" and the Stevie Wonder tune "Higher Ground," I was reminded of a time when I was much younger! It was great to see Barack and Michelle singing along, as I was. They (and I) could not remain seated when "Higher Ground" was playing. I just loved it! When I heard the first few funky notes, I recognized it and started to boogie around the room!

but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Bettye LaVette's and Jon Bon Jovi's rendition of "It's Been a Long Time Coming" moved me. She (and he) sang it as soulful as I have ever heard it.

could sing the blues, and sing it so beautifully. I teared up so many times I lost count. Beyonce's "America the Beautiful" was really beautiful too. Everything was amazing.

29. I normally avoid them too,
but this was magnificent. I didn't even know who Beyonce was...wow, she sang so beautifully! I also got very choked up at Tom Hanks reading the Abraham Lincoln quotes to the Lincoln tune by Aaron Copland. Copland is one of my favorites--not pop music by any means. I was just bawling and blowing my nose.

I couldn't have imagined anything better. It wasn't so much about Obama as it was about America. The music was outstanding and so were the readings.

America is back baby.

But most importantly, Michelle and the girls looked stunning.

Reminded me of the concerts on the west lawn of the Capitol at Memorial Day and the 4th of July only much larger and more star studded.

I have always enjoyed those concerts as corny as they can feel sometimes. This one was great!

45. Some of it was too much uber patriotic sentimentality
Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 10:52 PM by lunatica
But I loved all the rock stars and some of the people who spoke very succinctly quoting Presidents and Great men like MLK. I was delighted to see some of my favorite actors there, and I like the historic footage of some of the important things that happened on that spot through our history.

I'm proud to be American, but I also consider myself a citizen of the world, but nationalistic over-sentimentality makes me very uncomfortable. It's a dangerous thing in my opinion. It goes a little too overboard in the narcissism so many Americans tend to exhibit, as if they're telling each other and the world that we're so much better than anyone else or any other country. Which we aren't and that makes me uncomfortable, as if we're braggarts. It makes us look arrogant.
