Tiger Woods to speak at We Are One
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/01/tiger-woods-to.html

Tiger Woods operates in the Republican stronghold of the PGA Tour, and before the presidential election, he refused to say whether he was supporting Barack Obama or John McCain. Now, the No. 1 golfer in the world will be part of the president-elect's inauguration ceremonies.

Woods said on his website today that he has accepted an invitation to speak at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday at "We Are One," a concert and celebration that will feature Beyonce, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder, among others.

"I am honored that I was invited to this historic event and look forward to participating in Sunday's festivities," Woods said.

Woods has traditionally stayed removed from politics, though after Obama's victory he told CNBC, "I think it's absolutely incredible. ... My father was hoping it would happen in his lifetime, but he didn't get to see it. I'm lucky enough to have seen a person of color in the White House."

HBO plans to broadcast the event live at 11:30 a.m. PST on Sunday. HBO is encouraging cable television companies to allow non-subscribers to tune in. The show also will be beamed live on hbo.com.

That's going to leave a mark. All the right wing loonies on the PGA will have something else to be pissed off about. Poor Davis Love XXIII

1. There's nothing they can do about it...
He'll just keep beating their asses on the fairways and greens like he's done for the last decade. I can't wait until he comes back from his knee injury. I hope he can win the Masters this year. He's kind of choked it away the last couple of years with bad putting.

I've heard he's actually pretty well-liked on Tour behind the scenes. Even though he beats all their asses all the time, he's apparently pretty down to earth with the other players in the locker room.

3. One reason they like him is that his presence triples their TV ratings
and thus their purses.

5. Well yes...
every one of them is around 10 times wealthier than they would be if Tiger wasn't a golfer. Phil Mickelson has publicly shown a lot of graciousness towards Tiger for this. So have some of the other players. One guy I hate is Vijay Singh. That guy is a total asshole and completely ungrateful for what Tiger's done to change the game (and Vijay's pocketbook).

4. I wonder if Tiger has future political aspirations?
Smart guy. Stanford educated. Won't be on the PGA Tour forever. This would be a good way to start earning political credentials.

6. Tiger has a ton of charisma...
I'd be interested to see him speak about something he's passionate about in the way that Barack speaks about serving the country. When Tiger gives an interview at a press conference, he usually gives a really predictable answer so as to not upset his sponsors. He's a pretty boring guy from that standpoint. However, on the golf course he has a TON of charisma. A million dollar smile similar to Barack's and a ton of passion for what he's doing. Tiger is known for his temper on the course, cursing loudly when he screws up. But it's because he's so passionate about trying to succeed and always get better as a golfer that he gets so frustrated with himself. He has a ton of passion for golf. If he could find passion for politics, I could see him being a very strong politician.
