14. Fascinating. Matthews gets kudos for dissing Bush. And McClellan gets nothing
I would say that smells a little of hypocrisy, no?

15. I have a problem with both of them...
Regarding Matthews, he is part of the shameless media propaganda machine that is every bit as responsible as the Bush administration for dragging the country into the war.

Regarding McClellan, he chose to go along with lies and waited until it was ultra popular to criticize the war, conveniently allowing him to cash in with book sales. Why the hell didn't he resign immediately when he realized they were stretching the truth on intelligence reports? He should have resigned and blown the damn whistle on the entire scheme. But he didn't. It just seems to me that he has gained a lot from showing up late to the party in criticizing the administration. Makes me wonder whether he's actually telling the truth or just saying what people want to hear.

18. Matthews, "for dragging the country into the war"? No.
There were very very few media types who came out plainly in opposition to starting the Iraq war, and Matthews was one of them, in terms that one has to admire.

"So I'll say it: I hate this war that's coming in Iraq. I don't think we'll be proud of it. Oppose this war because it will create a millennium of hatred and the suicidal terrorism that comes with it. You talk about Bush trying to avenge his father. What about the tens of millions of Arab sons who will want to finish a fight we start next spring in Baghdad?

Well, that's it for now. You know where I stand."

Chris Matthews, September 1, 2002

(That's handling it better than our 2004 presidential/vp nominees, imo.)

will start to appreciate him more. i actually think he'd be a good Senator for PA. He's be be better than Arlen "Magic Bullet" Spector.

20. I had the same thoughts about McClellan
I'm happy to see him criticizing Bush. And maybe he's absolutely sincere. But he took a paycheck from the guy for, what, a couple of years? I wonder what he'd be saying now if McCain had won, although to give him credit, he published his book before the election.

I don't blame him for trying to save his reputation and make a few bucks now that Bush is so deeply unpopular. But I would have respected him much more if he'd quit when it was hard rather than when it was easy.

Having said that, I kind of like him. He always struck me as a guy who didn't know how evil his boss really was until he took the job, and was forced to defend what he knew perfectly well was indefensible.
