4. Flight 1549 from Charlotte to LaGuardia down in the Hudson River.
Plane is remarkably intact from nose to tail and apparently in very shallow water as most of the tail and fuselage is above water. Surrounded by many ferry boats and starting to get police boats around it.

Water is remarkably cold - hypothermia is a real issue.

US ScAIRlines again!

Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 03:53 PM by Roberto1223
A f-ing BIRD!!! A flock of geese! Pilot knew he had to land as soon as possible. Given his options it looks like he decided to land in the water.. :wow:

8. MSNBC says "Flock of Geese".
You'd be surprised at the damage even 1 small bird can do to a jet engine.

copilot was not killed. Had to land with the bird hanging off the shards, it was a mess.

had been in full flight over land. Thank God for that. The plane looks relatively in tact.

23. ABC news guy doesn't seem to understand that jet fuel is lighter than water.
so YES it would remain bouyant with the jet fuel in the tanks.

Probably it is better than if they were empty allowing water to flood into an empty tank.

Jet-A weighs about 6lb/gallon

Water weighs about 8lb/gallon

30. make that the NBC guy!
Doesn't seem to understand that you can't put a screen in front of the engine because it would reduce engine efficiency due to the turbulence it would cause.

A reporter with New York One News saw the plane with flames coming out before it went into the river. Commuter ferries immediately went to it to rescue passengers.

Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 04:35 PM by Beacool
I'm in Jersey City on the 31st Floor of the second tallest building in NJ. We have a perfect view of Manhattan.

It appears that they were able to rescue everyone. Thank God!!! I had flashbacks to 9/11 and the United plane that crashed into the South Tower while I was across the street from it. I'm sooooo relieved that this time the outcome was so much better.

Praise should be given to the fantastic pilots, the crew and the ferries that rescued most of the people (just as they did on 9/11 when people were jumping into the Hudson in desperation).

:-(

31. I agree. I am a native New Yorker and it just kills me to hear when tragedy hits our city. I'm happy
that they had a great, cool-under-pressure pilot that did not panic and saved the day under dire circumstances. It is great to see our city pulling together, ferries, strangers, helping out like they did during 9/11.

32. We are still watching it and they are still towing the plane to shore.
I don't get why they are towing the plane to NY when it was on the NJ side of the river right in front of the Port Imperial ferry terminal in Weehawken. We all recognized the buildings in the background (were are also watching it on ABC).

Yes, I get nervous when I hear planes fly too low. Even after all these years I wish every plane I see on the air that they reach their destination safely.

36. I don't know.
Some guy called the ABC local station saying that he was a flight attendant for Continental and saw the plane land in the water from his 18th Fl. apt. terrace in Hoboken. He knew immediately that the plane was in trouble because it was flying way too low and there was no engine noise. He marveled at how well the pilot landed it on the river. It appears that it did land on the Jersey side, but the current took it to the middle of the Hudson.

They have confirmed that there are no fatalities which is the most important thing. Those people have a lot to be grateful for, they got a second chance at life.

Same as on 9/11. They got there before the rescue boats because they were already on the water and nearby. I hope that someone commends them for their efforts.

North Jersey.

Yes, you are just as tough and just as nice.

Nowadays, I live in the south where the "New Yorkers are rude" meme is alive and well.

I find it absurd. NYers and NJers are some of the best folk in the country!

Let's not forget our friends in CT, they are survivors too. I'll also include those who commute from PA. Heck, at this rate, I'll be including the entire Northeast!!! LOL!!!

"New Yorkers are rude" is a national stereotype, just like making fun of New Jersey. We are not the Garden State for nothing, there are some beautiful places in the state. It's not only the industrial area that people see driving on the turnpike.

51. Exactly,
Boston is a source of delight for a history buff like me, ditto for Philadelphia. There's always something new to see that I hadn't noticed before. Unfortunately, NYC destroyed a lot of its historical buildings in the name of progress. Remember the amazing Penn Station? Thank goodness Grand Central was saved from the wrecking ball!!!
