MSNBC Inauguration Notes: Who (Olbermann and Matthews) and Where (Movie Theaters)

Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann were removed from anchoring political coverage in September, and designated as "hosts" in November. On Inauguration Day in a week, they will "lead" coverage.

The Los Angeles Times' Matea Gold talks to MSNBC president Phil Griffin about the new new role for the duo. He says he's "comfortable with the role that Olbermann and Matthews will play at the inauguration because it's 'a whole day of color commentary.'"

"This is a day of watching the festivities and the pomp and circumstance," said Griffin.

Meanwhile, those looking to watch Matthews and Olbermann can do so from the comfort of their homes — or at the movies! Yesterday we received a tip linking to msnbcevents.com, where people are directed to "share an historic Inauguration experience with a live viewing at your hometown movie theater."

The Hollywood Reporter's Paul J. Gough explains the move, in which "27 theaters around the country" (in 21 markets) will show MSNBC's 11am-3:30pmET coverage. Tickets are free and can be reserved online....

1. I hope it's going to be an HD production
...SDTV and massive theater screens don't mix.

7. Nope. MSNBC is the last "news network" to go HD. They have caught Hell for this.
MSNBC's HD Election Gaffe

Washington, D.C. (October 24, 2008) -- CNN has been in high-def for more than a year. Fox News' High-Definition channel launched last spring -- just in time for the general election campaign for the 2008 presidential race.

But MSNBC? Well, the third entrant in the cable news network war has yet to offer a high-def simulcast channel. And now, network officials tell Multichannel News that it likely won't until the second quarter of 2009.

“Look, I’d love to be in HD right now,” said MSNBC president Phil Griffin. "The idea of the announcement before the election appealed to me. I pushed our guys hard.”

But, apparently, not hard enough. The news network, which is owned by NBC and features such iconic personalities as Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann, says it couldn't convert a second control room in time for the election. (One HD-ready control room was ready to go.)

snip...

The network is led by the cheapest man in town. Namely NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker.

8. Hopefully they'll pull in an HD production trailer for this event like they do for sports.
IMO it makes no sense to do this otherwise.

14. The one network I won't be watching it on is MSNBC.
I stopped watching them months ago. Besides, who wants to see the slobbering Matthews and his inane comments? I would rather watch it on C-Span or CNN.
