Obama on cover of comic book with Spiderman

<snip>
WASHINGTON — Spider-Man has a new sidekick: The president-elect.

Barack Obama collected Spider-Man comics as a child, so Marvel Comics wanted to give him a "shout-out back" by featuring him in a bonus story, said Joe Quesada, Marvel's editor-in-chief.

"How great is that? The commander in chief to be is actually a nerd in chief," Quesada said. "It was really, really cool to see that we had a geek in the White House. We're all thrilled with that."

The comic starts with Spider-Man's alter-ego Peter Parker taking photographs at the inauguration, before spotting two identical Obamas.

Parker decides "the future president's gonna need Spider-Man," and springs into action, using basketball to determine the real Obama and punching out the impostor.

Obama thanks him with a fist-bump.

Wow!

So how do you get one? Do you have to special order it or something?

5. This is going to be harder than I thought
One of the comic stores I just called said she didn't order enough. She didn't know Marvel was going to announce it in the press, so she only ordered enough for her regular customers and none extra for folks who normally don't buy comic books. Another store with a website where you can order online said it'll be available next Tuesday on a first-come, first-serve basis and limited to one person per copy.

Great :eyes:

3. My rule of thumb is "would this be cool if it was Bush?"
Idolatry of political figures is unhealthy, categorically.

IMO.

4. Bush's presidency isn't historical by any stretch of the imagination
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 11:01 AM by DesertedRose
except as a historic FAILURE.

Obama though....he's a "first," historically speaking, in many ways.

(And I don't see how being included in a graphic novel/comic book is "idolatry"....)

"Obama joins a long line of presidents in comics, including Ronald Reagan in the pages of "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns," Bill Clinton in "Superman: The Man of Steel," Richard Nixon in "Watchmen" and John F. Kennedy in "Action Comics." In one of the stranger presidential appearances, Jimmy Carter appears on the cover of "Superman vs. Muhammad Ali."

Previous celebrity guest stars in Spider-Man stories include Stephen Colbert, Jay Leno and John Belushi."

6. Reagan also appeared in an issue of The Falcon's mini series in '84.
And not only did John Belushi appear, so did the rest of the Not Ready For Primetime Players in an issue of Marvel Team-Up.
