3. He has addressed many of those.
If the campaign were still going on, you can bet he'd be mentioning Gaza. The US influence in the situation is what makes it more pressing.

4. Obama has to save the world now, even before the inauguration!
Without full access to all the information, too! He is superman! :sarcasm:

He should have solved our economic problems by now, too!

And brought peace and racial harmony. And handed full rights to all persons who have not heretofore had them. Oh, and he should paint my living room, too.

:sarcasm:

If Iran gets directly involved in any way, including humanitarian, Israel will use it as an excuse to attack them.

So instead of bitching about Obama maybe we should be counting our blessings Herr Bush only has 2 weeks left in office.

40. I doubt that is going to happen within the next 14 days, but if it were a serious possibility
Obama would handle it by getting on the phone with the Israeli Prime Minister and not by making public statements.

10. Speak???
Teddy Roosevelt had it 2/3 right when he said"Walk softly but carry a big stick".He should have added "and make damn sure your enemies know you will use it".I will wait, hope and pray that Obama will ACT to stop or control some of the crazy things going on .I will give him plenty of time , support and encouragement but my fear about him has always been that he is not tough enough to stand up against the many bullies. There is an old Russian proverb "Act like a lamb and you will soon meet a wolf".

11. right now, Obama can only support this administration or
remain silent. His silence, I believe, speaks volumes.

However, the single biggest difference between this conflict and most, if not all, the others you've cited is that Israel is only able to launch this horrific civilian slaughter with the blessing, money and arms from the U.S.

Our tax dollars are paying for this directly.

13. I Am Concerned About My Job, Hope He Focuses On The Economy
I was kind of against Bush's intervening arouond the world to impose his "vision," and just because Obama may share my international views, I also am not in favor of intervening internationally. Here's a new idea: Let's try using the UN, rather than trying to be the liberal version of John Bolton and unilaterally take (liberal) action internationally.

17. And as we've seen, if the US market goes down, other markets follow suit.
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 12:52 PM by HypnoToad
And if those go down, WW III might be what's called an "understatement" too.

I don't envy Obama right now. Especially when one-issue freaks coming in, putting their interest of personal issues over the economy. Nobody can get around the economy. Except national defense and foreign issues, which was also top of my list. Compare Obama to McCain and the difference is damn obvious. Obama has a far greater likeliness of uniting the world.

And it's all sad. I voted Obama for the same issue as well; the economy. For EVERYBODY will be suffering if that is not addressed. Even the mega-rich will suffer if the US economy crumbles, and there is no way to make the US irrelevant in the global economy. Fortunately.

I'm sorry others put smaller issues above those. That's their problem. I want what's best for the most amount of people, to alleviate and end the suffering. That's why I voted for Obama. On the two issues I've mentioned. Nothing else really matters right now, and won't for some time. Eventually other issues will. Right now, anything other than foreign relations and the economy are trifles. And I will not apologize for saying or believing that. Too much is at stake.

authority whatsoever to be making official statements on an issue of this complexity, while the last elected president still sits in the oval office? And what if Obama's statements somehow contradict those of the current administration? Is it wise to send mixed messages to the opposing sides in this conflict? I think not, and I don't think the State Dept., which is still under the control of the current administration, would appreciate it either.

As much as you may dislike it, as far as I can tell, Obama is someone who follows protocol. To deviate, in any way, from the WH stance on this issue would be perceived as undermining Bush, and could easily make an already untenable situation even uglier.

essentially making this a war of the US AND Israel on the Palestinians, makes it a bit of a different situation. Along with several other valid points made by others on this thread.

30. The difference is that what is going on in Gaza could touch off a regional war

A much larger war with the implications of a possible World War III

Israel is pouring gasoline on a fire that is barely contained.

And, it is morally reprehensible for him to not denounce the massacre of innocent civilians.

31. It's dangerous and stupid for him to make a statement until he's officially President.
When he speaks now it's no longer personal opinion - it's official state policy. And he can not do that until Jan. 20th.

35. Exactly.
When an international crisis breaks out in the world, it's important that this country speak with one voice, that voice being the president, who unfortunately is George Dumbya Bush at this time.

33. You really really really need to speak out yourself
and make yourself look less like a fool who projects all the injustices and the world onto some man who is not President of the USA, representing you and me.......

You need to take responsibility for your OWN opinions, and learn all there is to know about all of these complex issues, because you seem to think Obama must be perfect, and the world needs to know that YOU, among all human beings, are perfect, most informed.

Oh yes, you post on the DU because you are..............?

Tell us how more informed than all of us are who seek justice and less suffering in the world are..........you must have glamorous qualifications, and a reason you didn't run for President, and must pass off your unique information to Obama through the DU.......

Oh I know, you are not accountable here, only in the real world, where you are accountable for??????????????what???????????????
