5. He looks about as serious as someone would who is about to take on
all the situations he has to take on.

After going through a period of disenchantment and cynicism about "politics as usual" in the transition, I am starting to feel that the man needs every ounce of support we are able to give him, on every level.

Thanks for these photos.

6. That habit of having his hands in his pockets walking down stairs makes me nervous
Edited on Sun Jan-04-09 07:53 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
I know he's very coordinated but it still makes me wince, like someone running with scissors.

(I'm old enough to remember Jerry Ford's de-planing mishaps)

Thanks for the pictures.

but the military realizes he is their next commander-in-chief, so they salute. It's a sign of respect, and yes, it's cool. ;-)

20. Hi jwirr..
....no, no, no - I don't take them, I just wish I did! I mentioned before my first obsession - even before Obama  - is photography, especially news photography, so I spend far too much time looking up photo/news sites every day. That's where these photos come from, eg Yahoo, Daylife, etc. If I was brave and talented enough I'd love to be in Gaza tonight taking photographs to tell the story of the conflict, but I'm neither brave nor talented enough. So here I am, posting Obama photo threads - they're mainly just for fun, but tonight I think they're historical and beautiful in a spine-tingling way. Thanks.

21. Oh wow. Can you imagine how proud that young girl is of her mother,
the Air Force Captain? She has probably known hardship because of her mother's service to our country. Hopefully, tonight will have made it up to her in some small way. And now she knows just how cool her mom is. Damn good thing, too, since it looks like she's in those teen years. Wish I could have done something cool like that for MY kids when they were teens. Mighta hushed 'em up for a second or two, or at least stopped an eyeroll at me.

50. It's one of the fleet of official aircraft
the unit has. They have all shapes and sizes of planes for different duties and needs. We are more used to seeing the 747's in he role of AF1. This is either a 757 or 767 (I can't tell them apart). And you are correct that the title of AF1 only goes to the plane carrying POTUS, beyond that they are known by their tail numbers.

As for the salute, I suspect it is courtesy and perhaps out of habit for greeting dignitaries.
