Madigan: Possible impeachment vote next week
January 2, 2009 at 11:49 AM | Comments (0)

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is calling lawmakers back to Springfield next week for a possible vote on impeaching Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

A House special investigative committee weighing whether to recommend impeachment is scheduled to continue its hearing next Tuesday. And today, Madigan issued a letter telling all lawmakers to be back at the statehouse in Springfield on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

The letter says the House may be called to vote on the panel's report next week.

Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on corruption charges that included allegations he sought to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama. Blagojevich named former state Attorney General Roland Burris to the seat this week, adding fuel to critics' calls to impeach him as soon as possible.

1. Good, but it may be too late to stop his appointment of Mr. Burris.
But I will be happy to have Rod out of there if he is convicted.

2. I think the Senate has lots of ways to stalll...
Even if they may not have a strong case to outright deny the appointment.

HOWEVER, if they get Blog out of there via impeachment, the Senate's legally defensible case for denying the appointment appears to be strengthened signifcantly. fivethirtyeight.com had a good piece on it recently covering the back and forth between constitutional scholars.

So, it seems they only need to stall a bit....

3. Ironic that the nation can't seem to impeach the lying poseur president

But they're all set to take down a Democratic governor.
